The Latinos make up close to 16 percent of the total American population, thus becoming the 2nd largest ethnic community. Just like many other migrant populations, the Latinos seek to keep in touch with their Hispanic traditions and cultures. As Alvarez puts it, children born in the US are thus taught certain cultural events and values so as to maintain their lineage. The most common one as discussed by Alvarez in her book is the quinceañera. This refers to a girl’s celebration as she reaches fifteen. This day of celebration is supposed to mark a girl’s transition from being a child to an adult woman. Among other traditional symbols, these parties are huge and include choreographed dances and ball gowns.
This cultural event also had a religious meaning and ceremony that went along with it. Like traditional ways, the birthday girl has to attend a special Mass that includes her close friends a...
A quinceañera is a Hispanic tradition; however, other cultures and other stages of life have rites of passages very similar, such as a sweet sixteen. This rite-of-passage does not symbolize anything other than turning a year older; therefore, it does not affect a person’s self-identity nearly as much as a quinceañera does. Likewise, a wedding, which was once seen as a religious ceremony, seems to have lost some of its luster. The above two examples are very different, but neither help establish self-identity as well as a quinceañera. This may be because guidelines were never established or the “traditional” way of celebrating is no longer the only way. In addition, both have never, or are no longer, limited because of your gender and there is no spiritual significance attached to either. In the case of the sweet sixteen, while it is most prevalent in the American culture, it is not exclusive to it. On the other hand, quinceañeras are gender specific, do have a religious background attached to them, and are exclusive to one culture, which makes quinces so crucial in forming self identity.
A quinceañera is an event that is celebrated worldwide. The term “quinceañera” means fifteenth years in English. It’s an extravagant birthday bash for a young lady turning the age of fifteen.”Celebrating my quince años meant beginning a life of a new adult. It has also given me much more responsibility for my own actions” (Xochitl Comparan, Victoria, Texas). This event is celebrated differently by many diverse cultures, and as time goes by some of the traditions change. Even though the traditions may alter, the whole point for this eventful activity stays the same. The point for this event is to recognize the young lady’s transition from childhood to womanhood. This is also known as “the coming of age.” On this one day, it’s all about the girl, nothing else matters! Organizing one of these events is a very expensive and lengthy process. It takes a lot of time and dedication. There’s a lot to be incorporated in the huge event; such as planning the ceremony, every decoration detail for the reception, all the traditions that must happen during the day, and most importantly to figure out who will be a part of this ritual.
A Quinceanera is a special moment for all girls of the hispanic culture so planning is an essential part. First step is alway secure how much funds is available for the party because going over the budget could result in debt. Next is brainstorming the ideas you have for your future, soon to be,

The Structure of families is sometimes based on gender. Gender roles in the Dominican Republic are similar to the roles that use to be the norm in America and that is still present in some households. The men are treated as superiors while women are seen as house wives. Women are the primary caregiver, either through divorce or widowhood or if the husband is working far away from home (“Roles of Women”). Also women are expected to be dedicated in being a mother and a daughter and by their late twenties to be married (“Dominican Republic Traditions and Etiquette”). It is interesting that they are expected to be married at a certain age. The men take on the role that is traditional which is being the one who enforces rules. The role of the men and women is also based on the social class they are in. The middle and upper class families are called patriarchal and the father is the norm (“Dominican Family Structure”). In the lower classes of the Dominican Republic the women are taking on the role of the men, which is to support the family. In the lower class families the structure is sometimes matriarchal because the father does not live in the house (“Dominican Family Structure”). It is interesting that depending on the social class it determines the structure of the household. Also the family structure can also depend on the oldest married couple or within their extended family the oldest male would holds authority....

The Quinceañera is a celebration in Latin America that is very comparable to our Sweet 16 celebration, also know as the fiesta de quince años. The origination of the word comes from the feminine term of fifteen-year-old in Spanish. The overall celebration marks the transition from childhood to becoming a young woman. In earlier times this celebration was meant to be a teaching point for young women to learn how to cook, weave, and the art of becoming a mother. Depending on the family specifically, some can carry a religious tone, and some can be more traditional and casual.
A rite of passage is described to be “Ceremonies such as christenings, puberty rituals, marriages, and funerals, which we hold when¬ever a member of society undergoes an important change in status within the lifecycle of the group” (Crapo, 2013, p. 159). A rite of passage that is common in my heritage culture today is a Quinceañera. Research indicates this transition is a celebration in combination of rite of passage from youth to womanhood when she turns fifteen years old (“The secularization of Quinceanera”, 2016). The meaning of this event usually starts off with a mass that has a total of fourteen young girls, each young lady signifies a year of her youth. Following the mass is a celebration where the fifteen-year-old is escorted by
All Birthdays are important, but there is no other birthday that can over shadow a quinceañera. A quinceañera is more than just a birthday party; it is also a rite of passage, a religious occasion, and a celebration of heritage. My Fifteenth birthday will forever be frozen into my memory.
Coming of age ceremonies were already practiced in ancient times. Believing in the South American myths, the indigenous tribes of the Mexican, including amongst others the Incas and Mayas, hold special introduction ceremonies to prepare their youngest members for their roles as adults. The girls got to know qualities like cooking, which educated them for their role as a future mother and housewife. After this preparation, the girls were celebrated for completing their childhood, and then presented as an adult member of society. This is the oldest rite of passage ceremony known about and similar to Quinceañeras today. Later, when the Spaniards invaded Mexico in the 16th century, they adopted this kind of passage celebration to their culture
