Tupac Shakur was one of hip hops most influential and prolific writer. His name derives from a South American revolutionary who led an indigenous revolt against Spanish rule. Tupac Amaru means shining serpent and Shakur means thankful to God. Why is Tupac considered one of hip-hops most influential artist? He is very influential because of his love towards music, education, and caring about the youth in all communities. He helped uplift his community from being oppressed through the power of music by leaving a message on the hardships and problems in society, his importance in music was significant and his albums were impactful on the world because of the content they contained. He was an advocate for the people whose voices will never be heard, he represented everyone who was of color and how we can make change when we set our mind to it. A quote by Tupac was “I’m not trying to change the world but I guarantee you I will spark the brain that will change the world.” This quote represents a demagogue someone’s who’s determined to have an impact. This shows how this individual is willing to give everything they can to make change happen. Pac would do it with his heart and that’s what made everything he did such a big thing. Pac as a kid growing up would write lots of poetry and he even had his own journal. But many people believed that he was not an advocate and that he was not talented at all because of his offense lyrics which were explicit. But in the book “The Rose That Grew From Concrete” by Tupac Shakur he wrote where young minds grow and respect each other, based on their deeds and not their color, where a positive heart is all you need to rise beyond and succeed. (34) Not only did he write amazing poetry but it counters the argument because even though lots of his music was offense he knew how to write and he had a gift. Many of his music may have been violent and offensive but it was because he was angry at society and the corruption in the government. He got his inspiration from Niccolò Machiavelli author of the Prince, Tupac was greatly inspired by his work. This album topped the charts and in the first week sold 600,000 copies dropping the Beetles from the number one chart. Many people argued that this man was crazy and that his albums had no importance what’s so ever, because of just sales. Niccolò Machiavelli quotes “Everyone sees what you seem to be, very few get to see who you really are.” (47) These are some of the lyrics that Tupac changed and used in many of his lyrics to impact his community. He did this in a form so subliminal that you had to really pay attention. Some of those songs that he used many of Niccolò’s work were songs like Toss it up, Blasphemy, Hold Your Head Up and White Man’s World. This proves the importance of this album and the message behind it. In the cover we notice Tupac being crucified and the 7 day theory represents the days it took to complete the album. It also was the number of bullets he took before dying. Many allegedly think he faked his death because at the beginning of the album the first three seconds you hear Suge shot me. This proves the crucial thoughts of this individual and that’s what I meant by the subliminal messages that were left behind.
