As a person grows up in a household, they are influenced by many characteristics of their life. Family and culture may stimulus a person’s sense of responsibilities, ethics, and morals and many other aspects of life. “What is necessary to change a person is to change his awareness of himself.” (Abraham Maslow) I am who I am partly because of my family, but mostly because of who I want myself to be. The total organization of inherited and acquired traits of anyone has evidence of their behavior. Influences on personality developments follow under the inherited traits, natural environment, social and cultural environment, and personal experiences. Family influences on one’s personality development of the transmission of culture (traditional traits). “The humanist approach emphasizes the entire person and his or her interrelationship with culture.” (Hunt. 127) The seven elements of culture: conventions, mores (pronounced mo-res), laws, social institutions, artifacts, language, and social values. Conventions are simple customary ways of doing things. Mores are a type of convention but must be observed in culture to survive. Laws are
In life there are several factors that influence us. May it be with whom we surround ourselves with. But what we may not realize is that our culture or environment may influence us.
Everyone changes because of something that happened to them at one point or another, and it changes how they may think. External factors do affect one's identity, because, in reality, how could it not? Just seeing a poor person on the street could change one’s strain of thought. A few ways that external factors affect a person are that; external factors can shape how one thinks about someone or something, it can change one’s personality or reactions, and it can change one’s mood for long periods of time.
Identity is a group of characteristics, data or information that belongs exactly to one person or a group of people and that make it possible to establish differences between them. The consciousness that people have about themselves is part of their identity as well as what makes them unique. According to psychologists, identity is a consistent definition of one’s self as a unique individual, in terms of role, attitudes, beliefs and aspirations. Identity tries to define who people are, what they are, where they go or what they want to be or to do. Identity could depend on self-knowledge, self-esteem, or the ability of individuals to achieve their goals. Through self-analysis people can define who they are and who the people around them are. The most interesting point about identity is that some people know what they want and who they are, while it takes forever for others to figure out the factors mentioned before. Many of the individuals analyzed in this essay are confused about the different possible roles or positions they can adopt, and that’s exactly the reason they look for some professional help.
As human beings, we struggle to discover who we are and what is our individual purpose in life. It seems impossible to know what our mission in life is without knowing our identity. Psychology tells us that we have a social identity as well as a personal identity. Our social identity involves our nationality, religion, gender, and social roles. Personal identity focuses on our abilities, skills, personal attributes, and personality. Personally, I can admit I got lost trying to discover both my social and personal identity. I later learned Erik Erikson would consider my identity crises to be part of the Identity vs. Role Confusion psychosocial stage.
Cultural influences have formed who I am. “Every aspect of global communication is influenced by cultural differences”(Goman). Being both Mexican and American has affected my upbringing. “Culture is, basically, a set of shared values that a group of people holds. Such values affect how you think and act and, more importantly, the kind of criteria by which you judge others”(Goman). Since values of both cultures have been instilled in me, my family has certain expectations for me. In Mexican culture women marry young and are supposed to maintain the household and children. An education past high school is not necessary. In the U.S a woman is encouraged to have a career and be independent. My parents mix these two values together. I am expected to be able to maintain
Identity is the essential core of who we are as individuals, the conscious experience of the self-inside.
Personal Identity Personal Identity can be broken down into three areas: 1.) Body 2. Memory and 3. Soul. I am a sassy soul.
Being yourself can establish identity by being yourself. Knowing who you are will make life much easier and less worrying. No matter what happens in life, you'll always know who you are. By knowing this, an individual will benefit from it. It is easy to get lost in such an expanding society if a person doesn't know who they are, so knowing yourself inside and out, you can get back on the right path.
My family has influenced the way I see the world by creating an environment that encouraged certain behaviors or actions considered positive and quickly disciplined and corrected any considered negative. With a knowledge of acceptable and improper behaviors, my own moral guideline was created, allowing me to judge the character of others and choose the personalities I wished to surround myself with. The interactions with these people caused me to cultivate particular personality traits, these personality traits then influenced the development of my pervasive principles of influence. It is the development of these pervasive principles of influence that fundamentally define my perception of others, as well as largely direct most future interactions.
Many times people manage their identity differently based on where they are and who they are with. We often play one role at work or in public and a completely different role when we are at home with our family. It’s all a matter of how we wish to be perceived by others and the personal experiences that have influenced us over our lifetime. Our past experiences help us to gain knowledge about ourselves, such as our abilities, skills, and our weaknesses. We use this knowledge or perception to present ourselves to others in order to get the response or attention we are looking for.
The community I reside in determines my hobbies, my interests, my fashion, and my personality. I nearly cannot remember who I was before society told me what to be. Culture shapes who you are; hiding the toxins and exposing a path to conformity. It is easy to see each other as diverse, but in a like society, we are the same. We wake up at the same time, we get dressed in the same clothes, we drink the same coffee, and go
Identity is one of the most important aspects of life, as it differentiates oneself from the rest of the society by portraying a unique personality. It is important for an individual to have their own personal identity; however it is difficult to preserve it due to the social factors that influence everyday behaviour. Occasionally, society can be involved in a series of conflicts making each individual feels inhibited because of the apprehension of being tried by others. This fear can be the result of all social conventions that impose on the society a ‘barrier’ towards a total freedom.
Identity is a core and unavoidable part of our lives and it is the distinguishing character of personality of an individual that describes the role we play in society. Our actions shape our identity, and in turn, our identity shape our actions. With that being said, one of the biggest challenge we are faced with is change and from the moment we are born we are exposed to it. Things are constantly changing in our daily lives that affect us and influence our personalities and hence shape our identities. Whether we have grown 2 inches taller, lost our baby teeth, go to a new school, meet new friends, start a new job, and etc.
Culture plays a significant role in shaping people’s behaviors. Humans start to expose to culture the day they are born and they learn cultural values through their everyday life interacting with the people and environments around them. The cultural values often help us in guiding our behaviors and provide us a context in helping us identify the proper way of responding to various situations. Culture can help to determine human behaviors because culture can influence individuals’ psychological processes, development of self, and motivation. However, individual differences should also be examined in determining people’s behaviors.
There are many circumstances that children adapt their parent’s action, attitude, and method of doing things. If parents possess countless awful attribute, there is a high prospect that the children might acquire that attribute which can lead to numerous problematic situations for the children as they grow up (Simons, Whitbeck, Conger, and Conger, 1991). Family values is vital to the needs of a growing children for the reason that it is one of the major rationale why a child or a teenager act the way they do. Favorable family values can mitigate the rough, growing attitude of a child especially if they are taught of doing things the right approach. Bad family values, on the other hand, include parent’s atrocious behavior, unhealthy family environment, and poor parenting skills. If these poor family values do not ceased to exist, children would likely to have poor values that are likely to bear until they become an adult. In a nutshell, Parents, along with their compelling influence, have the capability to shape their children with their own
