But what we don’t see is any sort of change that can take place, what is it that we can do as a country to come together and make a decision that will help our people? The United States is such a dangerous country to live in even more now so with this Mass Shootings that are now going on which they all involve an assault weapon. It seems as if it is “common sense’’ now days where anyone can start Mass shootings. Assault weapon ban is one of the most widespread new methods of gun control which has been largely embraced by politicians. In fact this not the first time this all debate issue starts with banning Assault weapons from Civilians.
Imagine that kind of seizure on firearms in a country with 10x the amount of firearms in it, it simply just could not be done. One of the biggest gun control arguments out there is that firearms make it easy for criminals to do as they desire. He describes that one obvious change would be to “mandate a criminal background check for all gun purchases” as it would obviously stop criminals from getting their hands on a weapon (Keefe). Legalizing gun control will only further the loss caused to our county through the many instances that have occurred in the past and recently. In response to this, I believe that we should keep our guns free and our lives safe. Works Cited Keefe, Patrick.
Guns can be hazardous, but only if they are in the wrong hands. Owning a gun is a right that every American should take pride in having. Guns are used for self-protection, hunting, law enforcement and other practices. However, recent incidents, like mass shootings, have caused a change in opinions and demand for gun control. Obama’s proposals sought to reform the national firearm purchase check system, so that offenders and the mentally ill could not buy guns legally, and close down the unregulated secondary gun market which is such a handy supply line for the criminally inclined. While critics dispute that enacting restrictions on gun sales is imperative to keep Americans safe, gun control restricts citizens’ rights to the 2nd Amendment, proves ineffective in other countries, and neglects to lower the crime rate.
For example, gun control protects: law-abiding citizens, children, and any other type of citizen from other harmful citizens, such as criminals. It keeps guns out of criminal’s hands -- especially the mentally ill. Not only is there the fact that gun control will make it harder for criminals to achieve a gun, stricter background checks placed will help protect everyone. However, one of the most important reasons to implement gun control would be saving the lives of the thousands of people per year who are killed by handguns. Often, horrible gun-related crimes are committed by people who do not value human life, which translates to mental issues. In these type cases, it makes no difference how many laws are on the books because if a mentally deranged person is determined to secure a gun to carry out his or her plan, a gun is what he or she will get. When individuals determine to use a weapon to commit a crime they will find a way to secure the weapon, whether legally or illegally. It brings to mind the adage, “Where there’s a will there’s a way.” Therefore, implementing stricter gun laws and reducing the number of gun permits issued would, for the most part, negatively affect the good, law-abiding citizens. It is this group that could fall prey to the criminal who is going to possess and use a weapon regardless what he or she has to do to get it.
Enforcing an assault weapons ban can reduce the all-too-familiar occurrences of mass shooting and massacres. When Adam Lanza shot 26 people in Sandy Hook Elementary School..police say he largely relied upon a Bushmaster AR-15 "assault-type weapon," a semiautomatic rifle that could rapidly fire multiple high-velocity rounds. He was also equipped with magazines that held 30 bullets each (Plumer). As a chart from Princeton's Sam Wang shows, the number of people killed in mass shootings did go down in the years the [1994 Assault Weapons Ban] was in effect...and the number of mass shootings per year has doubled since the ban expired (Plumer). Weapons such as shotguns, assault rifles, and sniper rifles are still possible to illegally possess. They would still have access to these weapons and its citizens won’t have anything to protect themselves with. President Obama should know that we have the right to bear arms and protect ourselves if that situation should arise. Reforming gun laws is the right step towards a better place because it can prevent shootouts, save lives, and promote security. Without the reformation of gun laws, there is a possibility of frequent shootouts.
