Increase in Tuition
Dear ISU Cyclone Family Member,
Would you like to save yourself $300 to $900 every six months for four
years? Maybe go treat yourself to something nice each month or save up and
give yourself a big treat at the end of four years? Would you like to see
ISU continue with low priced high quality education? These two things will
be intangible if you turn and look the other way on this issue.
This week Iowa State is hosting the Board of Regents in the Sun Room of the
Memorial Union. The Board of Regents will be meeting to discuss and vote on
an increase in tuition beginning the 2001, fall semester. A 9.9% increase is
on the floor. This increase would put a heavy drain on all present and
future ISU students financially. It is critical that this 9.9% increase be
struck down. The citizens of Iowa should not have to pay another increase.
This enormous percentage is too much to ask.
The Government Student Body (GSB) has developed a proposal that will
increase tuition, but does not increase tuition at such a drastic increase.
(See enclosed sheet for more information.)
GSB and other Iowa State students and family are asking you to join them at
the Board of Regents meetings to express our dissatisfaction in this
possible increase. The dates for these meetings are:
Wednesday, October 18
And
Thursday, October 19
From 9 am to noon
The more representation, the better the chance of the 9.9% tuition increase
being denied. Come defend and protect yourself from a tuition increase that
is extreme, too expensive, and too high. Enclosed is an information sheet
on the tuition increase to inform you of what is really going on and why.
Sincerely,
Jeanine Farnen

Do you have $300 to $900 extra to give away? The Board of Regents thinks you do!
The proposed tuition increase at Iowa State is out on the table. The
increase would be 9.9%, or an extra $300 dollars per semester for in-state
students, and $900 additional for out of state students (Iowa State
Daily-Opinion). For a student getting their undergraduate degree at ISU
that is an additional $2400 for in-state students during their four years at
Iowa State; and that is an additional $7200 for out of state students during
their for years.
Last October the regents approved a 4.3% increase in Iowa tuition. Why another increase?
The urgent need for the tuition increase is due to a cut in funding to the
Regent Universities from the Iowa State Legislature.
At this day in age we bask in the luxury of having easy access to advanced technology at our disposal. From the World Wide Web, to cell phones, music, movies and video games the human race has thought of any and everything to keep us entertained. Over the years studies have shown reasonable concerns regarding the long-term effects of video games. These games can desensitize gamers to real life violence, which is usually seen in the younger crowd. The studies especially hit on the games containing player-on-player violence. Though these games are extremely entertaining and can get kids to settle down for a while, if not properly supervised, they can produce adverse effects. Other studies have shown that video games can be used as way to yield positive outcomes such as, good problem solving skills, cooperation in a group and the ability to flow. Although there has been psychological research on children learning through the actions of others some believe that children are automatically able to distinguish between what is just a game and what is reality. The longer they are allowed on their game system the more they become convinced that their games are real. Some researchers believe violent video games can channel the aggression of the child but the parents are to blame for what happens to the child after playing an excessive amount over a period of time. Children can become preoccupied with these violent video games which have been proven to be the cause of poor social skills, uncontrollable aggression and a false reality.

...National Football Championship, and that was in 1958, the year before they won their first Sugar Bowl. The College World Series has also been won four times, between 1991 and 1997, by Louisiana State University’s very own baseball team (“Louisiana Population 2013”).
In the novel “The Catcher in the Rye”, Holden is deals with one of the largest obstacles one would ever face in one’s lifetime. He must deal with the concept of development and the idea that he’s growing up, that he’s no longer a child and must accept maturity. This internal struggle is evident in multiple aspects of this novel, particularly highlighted when Holden visits the museum and the carousel at the conclusion of the novel.
It is justifiable for a war to be fought in the defense of one’s own nation or a nation who do not have the capacity to defend itself. This idea is best exemplified by the United States’ entrance into World War II. In the early 1940s, the world faced a very real threat from a skilled and fanatic army who hoped to ethnically cleanse all people they did not deem a part of the Aryan race. If the Allies had not intervened
According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, college tuition and relevant fees have increased by 893 percent (“College costs and the CPI”). 893 percent is a very daunting percentage considering that it has surpassed the rise in the costs of Medicare, food, and housing. As America is trying to pull out of a recession, many students are looking for higher education so they can attain a gratified job. However, their vision is being stained by the dreadful rise in college costs. College tuition is rising beyond inflation. Such an immense rise in tuition has many serious implications for students; for example, fewer students are attending private colleges, fewer students are staying enrolled in college, and fewer students are working in the fields in which they majored in.
One of the most important thing in our life is education, because it is needed for the rest of their lives. Education has become a mental stress for students who have to pay for tuition out of their pockets because tuition fees are increasing every year in a way that some people aren’t able to afford. Tuition is a fee for a class that a student has to pay in order to take the class. Education is very stressful matter and every student has to maintain really good grades because there is a lot of competition in every field. However, there are smart people who aren’t able to attend the best universities that they want to go to because university’s tuition is increasing and will continue to increase without staying steady. So what are the reasons behind increasing tuition, and what are the effects of it on students? What can the U.S. Department of Education do to try to solve this problem?

As tuition continues to increase every year, it should be a concern to many people. Rising tuition should matter to people who are attending college. As tuition prices increases, college students have to worry about how they will pay for college and what type of aid they should apply for. If tuition continues to rise, college students might have to apply for more financial aid. Rising tuition should be a concern of people who are considering to attend college in the future. With tuition prices increasing every year, people who plan on attending college will have to find ways to get financial help to pay for college or start saving up their money in order to attend college in the future. Tuition increases in the U.S. have been causing controversy since shortly after World War II.
This requires colleges and universities to raise tuition to students to cover the spread. The interesting fact is that, per Belkin, “Universities are not spending more money educating students than they have in the past.” With this two things are known so far; the first is that the government has reduced its funding per student and that the cost to educate each student has not risen. Dr. Fichtenbaum is referenced in the article, “How to get College Tuition Under Control” by Douglas Belkin in which he says, “Between 1987 and 2012, in real dollars, government support has declined from $8,497 to $5,906 per student.” To put the cost of tuition in perspective Roger Fillion, who wrote the article “Tackling Tuition,” also talks about how tuition has increased by 722% since 1983 while the next closest comparison is healthcare cost which have increased by 356% since 1983 (17-19). Douglas Belkin also points out the fact that states are covering less of colleges operating costs which must be paid for somehow. Therefore, the increase in tuition must be coming from other sources. In the same article, Dr. Fichtenbaum talks about what has caused college tuition to rise. The reason that many people state
From the beginning of an education in preschool, to the time of graduation 14 years later, everything learned, interpreted, analyzed, understood, or even misunderstood has its effect in the future. The question is always “what do you want to be when you grow up?” As you age, the career dreams develop into a more mature answer. No matter how anyone is raised, there is always someone pushing at least one other person to go to college. Then, that silly career question is turned around on them, “how exactly do you expect me to afford college?” Roughly, about $809.6 billion is spent on college in the United States each year. Along with all the money spent, deb comes trailing along. Everyone can agree college tuition is not cheap, not to mention the cost of books and supplies, and on some cases, room and board. It has come time for college’s to start thinking of the parents of the student’s bank accounts more often! One easy solution to lower the debt rate of college loans would be for college’s to let their students pay month-to-month tuition payments.
Vedder explains that universities in general believe that they can raise the price of tuition because due to the increasing amount of government aid to education, most notably student loans, the families haven’t been too concerned with the rising cost of education. He claims that there is a vicious circle in regards to university financing. In the first year, the tuition would be increased and to deal with the political pressure that comes with it, Congress makes student loans more accessible and affordable. As a result of this, the demand for education becomes greater and as such, the colleges are then able to raise prices again which would result in more political pressure and thus, more affordable loans. In order to deal with this growing problem, Vedder believes that the best way to do that would be to simply stop allowing these third parties to give more money when the tuition increases. By doing this, it would make the student more aware of the price of tuition, thus not as likely to enroll at a university with a relatively high cost of tuition.
The two worlds of childhood and adulthood are not as separate as Holden thinks they are. He cuts himself off from the rest of the world by judging others around him, mostly adults. In the book it says, “ What I liked about her, she didn’t give you a lot of horse manure about what a great guy her father was. She probably knew what a phony slob he was.” (Pg 3). The book starts off with him judging an adult that he barely knows. Holden is physically an adult, but in his mind, he is only a child. He can relate to a child better than he can with an
The National Eating Disorders Association states that eating disorders are conditions that arise from factors including physical, psychological, interpersonal, and social issues. Media images help define cultural definitions of beauty and attractiveness and are often acknowledged as one of the factors that contribute to the rise of eating disorders (NEDA). The National Eating Disorders Associations website, "The Effect of the Media on Body Satisfaction in Adolescent Girls", "The Media's Influence on Body Image Disturbance and Eating Disorders", and "Dieting Behaviors, Weight Perceptions, and Life Satisfaction Among Public High School Adolescents" are all articles that evaluate how the media may cause adolescent girls to develop eating disorders. In order to understand how the media?s portrayal of body image has an influence on adolescent girls developing eating disorders one must understand the attitudes young girls have about their body images, the emphasis on female thinness depicted in magazines and on television, and the way young women are influenced by the media.
