The most meaningful thought for me is “In the beginning is the word.” Like we talked about during the class, the word is really powerful, even though it is just the smallest unit of sharing meaning. Strangers begin a conversation by just a word, maybe Hello. I think the most difficult part of a communication is the beginning. People fear to be the first one to speak, or they do not know how to speak. That is also why people always talk with their friends instead strangers. As can be seen, once the conversation begins, it is no longer hard to continue. All we should do it to use the word to make the beginning. At the same time, the word is also important. Word is the beginning of every communication. People use words to express their emotions, thoughts, etc. Some words can really affect people for the whole life. Words are not only the tools that can be used to affect others, but also can change the relationship between others and you. That is also why coaches always give a meeting before a game; campaigners always give a speech before the vote. Words do change people’s minds. Even sometimes it is only one. People are in a society, it is impossible we cannot be affected by others at all. Some people believe that they cannot be affected by others’ words. That cannot happen. No one can live in a world where there are no words. Now it can be seen words are more powerful than we thought. It is a magic art that can change our lives. Thus, in the beginning is the word.
Here is my life experience how the word works on me. When I was in my junior high, I did not like my math teacher Shelly. She always wore bling-bling clothes, and seemed to show off during the class. I never talked to her. The only word I said to her was hello after clas...

...d thinking about what she just said. You really are smart! I ever thought I cannot learn math well because I was not smart. I was surprised to find that Shelly was not as rebarbative as before. I was a little bit changing the mind of how I thought about her. Later when I met the question I did not know how to deal with and was willing to give up, her words were always showing in my mind. You are really smart. I was thinking: “if I cannot do this, then no one can.” From last conversation with her I always talked with her after the class and asked her questions. I even forgot I did not like her before. Later in the next exam I got the highest score in math. Now I know I am probably not the smartest person in the world, but I know it is Shelly who said: “You are really smart!” that changed my world. The word begins the communication of the world between Shelly and me.
A person’s vocabulary is not limited to the specific words he uses. Vocabulary extends to different phrases used. For example, adding different sentence adverbs, such as “frankly”, “in fact”, and “obviously”, to the beginning of a sentence changes the tone of the speaker’s message. “I enjoy a challenge” is a simple statement, but its tone is perceived differently when changed to “Obviously, I enjoy a challenge”. The tone is more matter-of-fact, possibly less polite, to the speaker’s audience. This case can also be seen with the overuse of the phrase “I feel like”. In Molly Worthen’s article “Stop Saying ‘I Feel Like’”, she analyzes today’s overuse of “I feel like” among college students. This phrase has the power to change a fact into an opinion. “Global warming is an issue” loses its definite meaning when it is changed to “I feel like global

When discussing something like words and ideas it seems much simpler to allow someone who has done both for a living do it for you. This quote, quite succinctly, summarizes language, and ...
Words hold great power and when used correctly can influence what people believe and how they act.
People need to be understood. Being misunderstood leads to communication barriers. People need to be able to express themselves so that the message reaches the receiver. Different cultures have different ways of doing this, so it is important to realize that communication can be interpreted differently.
After reading “People First Language” by Kathie Snow, the first thing that came to my mind was the saying, “Sticks and stones may break my bones, but words will never hurt me.” I have never agreed with this saying because words can inflict pain just like sticks and stones. Words really do matter.
The power of words is immeasurable. Words help people to voice their opinions and express their thoughts and feelings. Our everyday lives are shaped by communication and in general language. A persons language can often influence success and happiness. America is viewed as a melting pot for numerous different people and their respective languages. Language is so vital in our society that a person of diverse ethnic background can face many tribulations throughout their everyday life.
If it hadn’t been for her making me learn how to think and learn for myself, I wouldn’t be where I am today. There were many times during my high school days where I needed to be independent in my learning because there were teachers who didn’t teach the lesson properly. While other student were struggling with those teachers I was able to overcome that trial and succeed in those classes. I’ve been told all my life that college is way more independent when it comes to learning than any other time I your life. I believe because I learned at such a young age how to teach myself, I have a greater chance at succeeding than other who have not had the same
Reminding each other that in order to look at the future the necessity is to deal with the present. According to Sullivan, “real thinking is better done without words than with them, and creative thinking must be done without words”, this is untrue because without words no one is able to think in both real and creative terms. The way people express themselves in writing is because they thought about the words they were going to be using to send the society a message. Sullivan states that people don’t have time to build words, but don’t words help in expanding the thoughts into bigger details. Words help in various forms of expanding the vocabulary and the thought
Throughout my life I have had struggles communicating to other individuals, because instead of having a normal conversation with another person, it seems I am only part of that to be a listener. When I started thinking about this topic I realized that the fault didn’t lay on the other person but on me for not being able to express my experiences in the simple way other do. It is a fact that not everyone knows how to communicate, and to this properly, there are many factors that go in that need to be learned. In order for communication skills to improve we must be receptive of our own capacity to effectively understand what a proper conversation with another person is like while still having in consideration that
language can allow us to communicate an exact idea or to persuade others to one
I felt a shock go through my body as I numbed up. “Wh wha what did she want?” My math teacher Mrs. Armstrong was worried about me and the fact that I do all the work in class and homework and when it comes time to take a test I fail. My teacher was willing to let me retake my test.
Communication is a huge part of our lives because through communication and language is that how we make sense of the world around us. Through language we can share information, express our feelings and creativities. In support, Stanley A. Deetz who wrote the book Democracy in an Age of Corporate Colonization, Dan O’Hair and Mary Wiemann who wrote the book of Real Communication has agreed on the concept of language is symbolic and we need language to better understand the world around us. Thus, this experience has gave me a better understating of the importance of communication. It has a lot taught me how to respect others and how to value time. It made me realize that I have such a rich culture but many people are losing it because of what they had gone
Conversation is defined as an “informal interchange of thoughts, information, etc., by spoken words; oral communication between persons” (“Conversation”). This informal talk gives people the opportunity to open up to others, analyze other’s perspectives, and share ideas and interests. Conversation is an intimate experience that initiates bonds between all who are involved. These bonds unite people, creating a sense of community. A community is described as a group of people that live in the same place or have common interests. In a community, people are proactive and are involved. Also, they truly care about the wellbeing of a common interest or activity. Conversation helps to bring people together in a community by giving a voice to all who are involved and uniting all as one.
Interaction is a significant part of our daily lives. Oral communication with others is inevitable, and therefore it is crucial for us to acquire the skills to do so correctly. Aside from simply stating words or expressing ideas, oral communication serves various purposes. Oral communication allows an individual to express emotions, ideas, and feelings; it gives people the ability to empower, inspire, and motivate those who listen; and it allows people to share knowledge and traditions, as well as build their self-esteem. Oral communication is also useful in leading us to new discoveries, ideas, cultures, and perspectives (O’Neill). Thus, oral communication serves several different purposes in daily life; yet each of these purposes are connected to an even larger purpose. According to the textbook Communication: Making Connections, “Effective communication is critical to living successfully in today’s soc...
