Elie Wiesel wrote Night to illustrate his appalling experience during the murder of millions of Jews, also known as the Holocaust. In the book there is a presented palpable struggle Elie has with his faith in God. He not only loses his family, himself but his trust in God. There is a visible transition in Elie’s beliefs towards God. At the very beginning of the book his confidence in God was impervious. He asked himself “Why did I pray? Throughout his recollections, it is clear that Elie has a constant struggle with his belief in God. Prior to Auschwitz, Elie was motivated, even eager to learn about Jewish mysticism. Yet, after he had been exposed to the reality of the concentration camps, Elie began to question God. According to Elie, God “caused thousands of children to burn...He kept six crematoria working day and night...He created Auschwitz, Birkenau, [and] Buna”(67). He was always contemplating the existence of God. On page 69, while supper is being served and the Jews are supposed to be fasting because of Yom Kippur, this Jewish holiday would require them to fast, Elie’s father required him to eat because it was too risky for Elie to starve or become sick if he didn’t. Elie then says, “And then, there was no longer any reason for me to fast.” “I no longer accepted God’s silence.” Elie here is giving up hope and showing signs of distress, which is completely reasonable considering all the deaths they are witnessing a day.
He had strong faith in God but yet as the story goes on, the camp starts to affect him and slowly loses faith. Night by Elie Wiesel was a memoir on one of the worst things to happen in human history, the Holocaust. A terrible time where the Nazi German empire started to take control of eastern Europe during WWII. This book tells of the terrible things that happened to the many Jewish people of that time. This time could easily change grown men, and just as easily a boy of 13. Elie’s relationship with God and his father have been changed forever thanks to the many atrocities committed at that time.

This is at the start of the book and when Elie would pray and go to the synagogue because of his faith.
Eliezer loses faith in god. He struggles physically and mentally for life and no longer believes there is a god. "Never shall I forget those moments which murdered my god and my soul and turned my dreams to dust..."(pg 32). Elie worked hard to save himself and asks god many times to help him and take him out of his misery. "Why should I bless his name? The eternal, lord of the universe, the all-powerful and terrible was silent..."(pg 31). Eliezer is confused, because he does not know why the Germans would kill his face, and does not know why god could let such a thing happen. "I did not deny god's existence, but I doubted his absolute justice..."(pg 42). These conditions gave him confidence, and courage to live.
When people are placed in difficult, desolate situations, they often change in a substantial way. In Night by Elie Wiesel, the protagonist, Elie, is sent to the Auschwitz concentration camp where he undergoes many devastating experiences. Due to these traumatic events, Elie changes drastically, losing his passion in God, becoming disconnected with his father, and maturing when it matters most.

Elie chose conclusion B, because no good and just God could possibly sit idly while disease, death and despair surrounded several million people. To some God was hanging “from [the] gallows” (Wiesel 65). God had abandoned them, God no longer existed, God was dead. As hundreds of thousands of people were massacred this is how Elie came to feel.
