In Vitro Fertilisation Report Introduction Process and technical aspects In Vitro Fertilisation (IVF) is a chance of achieving pregnancy and is a process that can be used to overcome issues affecting fertility which include: sperm antibodies, unexplained infertility and endometriosis.1In order for a woman to be able to follow through with the procedure treatment of IVF pre-treatment test and preparations are the first step.2 IVF treatment information and discussion with both parents takes place in order for safe and prepared treatment of IVF. 2 As seen in Figure 1, the process starts with eggs production stimulated by hormone therapy.2 In some instances preparation for egg collection an intranasal spray is used in the ovaries and uterus.2 Follicle growth treatment stimulated by an injected is what stimulates egg production.2 Ovulation timing is then monitored based on ultrasounds and blood tests.2 The next procedure is to collect the eggs (retrieved from ovary) and place them with many thousands of sperm (usually 100,000). Alternatively if any complications or concerns arise with the sperm quality the process of fertilisation is carried out by what’s called Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI). 1 This process is when one sperm is inserted or injected into each individual egg.1 Now that the eggs and sperm are combined, fertilisation then takes place in the culture dish in a laboratory, over a period of 2-5 days.2 After fertilisation occurs, a procedure known as Embryo transfer takes place, shown in figure 2, which is when the eggs get transferred into the woman’s uterus (a simple procedure).The procedure is simple and similar to a pap swear.
