The article by Glater and Finder, “In Tuition Game, Popularity Rises with Price”, it discusses how different colleges have adjusted their tuition rates to match competition and also to increase student count, which has shown to be effective in most scenarios (2006). As a consultant to the president of a liberal arts college to better understand the college admission director, Susan Hansen’s argument that the quantity demanded increases with price of tuition. Susan’s case provides insight of tuition in the higher education system of colleges and universities. The case states that institutions that have increased their tuition rates and decreased financial aid have experienced an increase in their applications received. On the other side, institutions that have decreased tuition rates and increased financial aid have experienced a decrease within their applications received (Glater & Finder 2006).
The director of admissions, suggested that school’s increase their tuition rates and lessen financial aid assistance to prospective students. Her argument is based on data from competing colleges and the decisions to increase tuition rates. This in effect has led these institutions to move upward on the demand curves. I was attending Warren Wilson College when announcements were made to increase tuition costs with the following academic year. I feel that this would negatively affect the retention levels of current students and graduation rates. Which is usually a way of reviewing the academic reputation of the different institutions, its common information displayed when considering a school. This argument fails to analyze how the retention and graduation levels might be affected by this tuition
