In the Blizzard Through the terrain they stepped, the harsh snow blowing in their face, they trudged on through the snow. The explorers set up camp in the evening, they were soo close to their goal to reaching the Arctic. They woke up and trudged on, through the deep and treacherous snow. “Roar”, all of them stopped in their tracks, they looked around but saw nothing except for the thick blanket of pure white snow.
“Did you guys hear the sound?” someone said.
“YES,” they all replied. ROAR! The sound was heard again, this time, louder than before, the explorers huddled in a group and then, Kimmy was dragged out by an invisible force, she struggled and then went still. The rest of the group was astonished and they set out to find the invisible
As Jonas reached the top of the hill, the chill seemed to grow from his bones. Jonas and Gabe climbed onto the red sled from the memory. He clutched Gabe closer as the sled gained speed and the trees flew by. A few feet from the base of the snowy hill, the sled broke on impact with a rock. An example of the cycle followed by her father, his father, and his father before him is told when Blunt recalls a major blizzard in December 1964 that trapped the family and some neighbors in their small homestead. She unemotionally describes how her father simply proceeded to go through the motions of keeping the pipes from freezing, calmly accepting the fact that he could do nothing as the storm progressed and he could not prevent loss of a of their livestock. Or how when he first ventured out to check on the animals in their nearby barn and nearly lost his way back in whiteout conditions. Later, when the storm passed, she told of playing amongst the frozen corpses of the cattle, jumping from ribcage to ribcage, daring her older brother and sister to cut off pieces of the animals, all with the calm acceptance that this was so normal, nothing strange about it.
We hit a down hill point so we grabbed drift wood. It would save man power and be faster to sled down. The rest helped Landon out the most because he was the smallest so he didn 't have energy left to use. But this refreshed him so we could keep going. Time was not on are side. In the “Black Blizzard” by scholastic scope the article describes how people lived during the “Dust Bowl.” The dust storms are like a tidal wave but instead of water, it has dust and dirt. Some of these dust storms could go 7,000 feet high. Animals ran in fear of the storms. During the 1930’s Oklahoma, Texas, Kansas, New Mexico, and Colorado were hit by hundreds of storms. This natural disaster destroyed the economy of the whole area. Families moved to the Great Plains. With hard work farmers were able to grow corn and wheat. In 1931 there was a terrible drought in the middle of the nation. For five years in a row crops failed and people couldn’t pay their mortgages. With no rainfall soil became loose, dry, dusty, and blew away. Dust buried
Suddenly, they noticed something was passing by them in a distance of a half a mile. ?We perceived a low carriage, fixed on a sledge and drawn by dogs, pass on towards the north.? It was very strange to see another human/carriage on ice. It was a shock to the crew to see a single man on sled drag by dogs through Northern Sea. Comparing to a well equipped ship, the sled looked like a deadly ride. As mentioned earlier you could only see the endless ice surrounding them and they couldn?t believe that a single man would travel far from the Big Land. However, the man on a sled was a gigantic stature and most likely he was a strong and a brave man.
Settlers maintained their crops and livestock, but while doing so the temperature drops past the freezing point. Children were attending school when the blizzard started to make its way toward the prairie. Unprepared with the proper clothing to at least have a fighting chance to stay warm during the frigid temperatures. These children were without over coats to keep warm, in one situation with two sisters Eda and Matilda, the author wrote “the older sister Eda took off her wrap to cover the younger sister.” (Laskin, 46) Times were very different then they are today, where heavier clothing are required and more available may not have been accessible to the settlers of that time. It was understood that so many children died with only a blanket of some sort, while walking against the heavy winds that was strong enough to rip it from the shoulders of the children. David Laskin’s The Children’s Blizzard is a heart wrenching story based upon the Great Blizzard of 1888, which was appropriately titled the The Children's Blizzard because of “the 213 children across the Great Plains who died in its wake” (Beccy Tanner). Many immigrants took the big step of journeying out west, seeking the promising lifestyle it offered. The government would give these migrants a set amount of acreage for only a small fee as encouragement, so the empty land could be put to use. At this period in time, “It was the age of confidence. Arrogance was epidemic” (Laskin 5). Many people believed they knew all there was to know, especially the meteorologists of the era. Their oversight
of men who had lost their lives in their effort to reach it [North Pole], I felt
Obviously that was not the situation which was meant to occur. The cold served as a lesson to be taught to all explorers who would set foot into the never-ending winter from that day on. The continuous efforts that the man made to start a fire symbolize his will to survive. No will however is match for mother nature. The suffering man took on the role as a great teacher and hopefully preserver of life for generations to come.
As Okimasis rides through the snow, dragged by his pack of dogs, he confronts various environmental obstacles. The imagery included throughout the passage illustrates the cutthroat and quick perceptions of the nature surrounding the situation. The sled glides over the “creaking snow” of the “one hundred and fifty miles of low-treed tundra.” The representation of the area allows for clear pictures to develop mentally. Have you ever seen snow before? That white fluffy stuff that covers the ground completely. Well if you have, I am sure you have overcome an obstacle in your life and have reached something “irreplaceable and beautiful” (102). Just like Sister Zoe had said when she saw that snow falling from the sky. This story was very enlightening because the way the author brought in herself and portrayed herself through the character Yolanda was very intriguing. She brought the subject to life in many ways. However, the author of “Snow” uses two specific elements, its symbolism and its character to prove how overtime one individual will be able to overcome obstacles. Not only does theses elements point this out but the narrator also makes an impact of the reader as well.
