Violence in a community consequentially causes a community to unite and encourages its people to display good morals. Truman Capote displays the importance of virtues and morals throughout In Cold Blood. As a deadly murder unfolds Capote utilizes the real life scenario to show how the background of two killers and the reactions of townspeople play a role in this case. The redemptive community and family affiliated exemplifies the importance of proper morals while the perpetrators of the crime create examples of unethical decisions. The main argument behind prohibiting Truman's In Cold Blood in schools lies in the scandal that the book surrounds, the murder of the Clutter family. Violence disrupts and devastates a community, causing a loss of innoncence in those affiliated with the murder. Nancy Ewalt was the first to find the family in the house, at a young age the effects of discovering this site would be horrific to such a innocent mind. For Nancy, she cannot articulate for herself the action of telling, or capturing the experience in thought, memory, and speech (LAM 37). She cannot "make sense of the nonsensical, of an experience that defies reason or logic," simply because she cannot understand who or why anyone would commit such a crime. Along with Nancy, Susan Kidwell was present when the family was found; Nancy cried out to her father regarding their deaths but Susan refused to accept the reality. Susan would not accept their deaths saying, "No she isn't. And don't you say it. Don't you dare. It's only a nosebleed" trying to rationalize the situation. Though the girls will be affected permanently it is valuable and teaches a lesson that the townspeople and readers should not ignore. Capote’s novel, In Cold Blood introduces the reader to two men; Richard Eugene Hickock known as Dick throughout the novel, and Perry Edward Smith whose lives of crime are almost identical; although both Perry and Richard come from very humble backgrounds, their childhood particularly their family life, has very little in common. It is not until later in their lives that we begin to see similarities between the two men. Despite their differences, Perry’s upbringing and Dick’s genetic disposition allow both men to share a disregard for life, which becomes apparent on the night they gruesomely burglarized and murdered four innocent members of the Clutter family.

In a place where everyone knows everyone, it is hard for the community to adjust to the losses without proper compensation, and sometimes the only way is through punishing those by death.

The narrative promises to create an understanding of the crimes and get to the bottom of the killers' motives--if not through the legal system, then perhaps through the process of psychological analysis. Both Smith and Hickock displayed these symptoms, meaning that mental illness played a significant role in the murder of the Clutter family. This theme and the many others found in In Cold Blood guide the storyline and reflect the points Capote was intending to make through his work. Therefore, it is critical for students to spend time analyzing required books to identify such themes in order to gain understanding about the purpose of the book as a whole. The film Capote, based on the how the writer of “In Cold Blood” did his research to write his book, a masterpiece of literature, has portrayed Capote’s behavior during his research vividly. Capote’s behavior during the years Perry waits on death row in order to get personal testimony of the night of killings is a controversial topic. Some argue that what Capote did was absolutely necessary for an ambitious writer to create such a master piece while other argue that human ethics is more important than the creation of an ideal “non-fiction noble” and the paths he took to get there are morally ambiguous. Even though he gave the world a milestone in literature, his behaviors seem unethical because he lied, pretended to be a friend of an accused murderer who was in a death row, and did not have any empathy to him.
