The essay. With the exception of a few budding writers, the majority of the high school population can be found groaning and complaining over this assignment. These students may not be aware of how beneficial an assignment such as this will be, if they decide to put the necessary effort in. Many essays written at a professional level have had a great influence on society and are still remembered. Strong writing is a skill intelligent and well rounded students possess; mastering this skill shows the ability to communicate and formulate thoughts into coherent sentences. High school is the prime time to focus on essay writing so that students can be prepared for college and their futures beyond the school walls. The amount of students entering college unable to write coherent essays is evidence of the high school education system’s failure to place enough emphasis on essay writing. No matter the subject, essay writing provides a window and opportunity for expression. Unlike traditional multiple choice tests, essay writing provides a space where students can communicate openly and freely because there is no definitive right or wrong answer. Writing essays also gives students a unique opportunity to share their thoughts and often times, their opinions. The thought process required for an essay is much different than any other form of assignment. When I am assigned an essay, the critical and in depth thinking involved help me understand concepts at a higher level and become a better student. Essay writing has also enabled me to discover my personal style and be more creative. Furthermore, I have found that writing skills are tied to speaking and communication. Students may be strong in other areas outside of essay writing; it is not fair to discredit and disregard their efforts and achievements. Students who cannot write well are simply not well rounded. For this reason, incomprehensive students should still be able to perform well in school but not excellent. For instance, a student can be highly skilled in departments such as math and science but subjects like english and writing may come as a challenge to them. Students like these should not earn the best marks in courses where writing is essential. The inability to write well should reflect on a student’s grades slightly. In this case, a high school student’s career is not a failure because they did not earn the highest marks possible. Although it may help, individuals can still be bright and successful without being the best writers. In addition, students must not able to graduate high school if they cannot write a single decent essay. The institution is responsible for enabling students to be able to write if they cannot do so already. A lack of this skill among students shows that schools are not developing capable young adults. Moreover, a high school diploma has little value if the students holding it cannot even meet the basic standards of writing. Students may still perform well in school
