World Environment Day
“There is no single effort more radical in its potential for saving the world than a transformation of the way we raise our children.” - Marianne Williamson

A Modest Proposal Concerning the Environment * Based on Jonathan Swift’s “A Modest Proposal” (1729). It is a melancholy object to those who travel through this great country to see isolated corners of this fair realm still devoted to protecting the environment. The wretched advocators of these ideals are frequently seen doling out petitions and begging at their neighbours’ doors to feed their obsession, which keeps them in the contemptible poverty that they so richly deserve.
Climate change has become of the world’s major issue today. The earth’s climate is always changing in a very fast and also in different ways. Climate changes affect our lives psychologically, emotional and also physically. Climate change is defined as a long term change in the earth’s climate, especially a change due to the increase in the average atmospheric temperatures. Due to this change in temperature, a lot of changes has occurred in our environment, these changes include rising sea levels, flooding, melting of polar ice caps, hotter days, colder nights and heat waves. These climate changes plays an important role in shaping our natural ecosystem, our human economics and also the most important, it affects the human race. For
Ecological problems have drawn attention from all over the world. With the prevalence of global environmental crisis resulted from rapid development of science and technology, political filed has responded to the issue by issuing some policies; social field has responded to the issue by organizing some activities to evoke the public’s environmental consciousness. As the leader of people’s spiritual trend, ecocinema has also reflected and considered environmental crisis, such as global warming and biological diversity. Ecocinema represents the relationship between human beings and the nature from the macroscopic point of view. Films such as the day after tomorrow, FernGully and Avatar use different approaches to reconstruct the ecological consciousness of the public with visual representation of the nature as the subject. Environmental films are full of aesthetic values in the form, scenes as well as the theme and content. However, film practices also damage the environment when they promote environmental protection.
...such as recycling and reducing waste has significantly helped our environment and will continue to if future generations practice these same habits. For deforestation, many organizations have strived to plant more trees and add more oxygen to the atmosphere as well as nutrients for the soil. Seeing that although humans create many negative impacts in our global environment, there are many positive arrangements in correcting these issues.
The primary purpose in the creation of Earth Day is beyond increasing concerns about pollution, but also to present a wide range of other ecological problems and
“We need to teach the next generation of children from day one that they are responsible for their lives. Mankind’s greatest gift, also its greatest curse, is that we have free choice. We can make our choices built from love or from fear.” -Elisabeth Kubler-Ross

I think that learning about the environment starting at a young age gives children the chance to discover and critically evaluate the world they live in. This is an important thing to teach children early on, which I believe is becoming a more prevalent topic at younger ages. I know I did not read most of the books I found for this project until now. I did not really have a strong environmental introduction until I reached high school which is another reason I picked this topic. Imagine if these books have an impact on children, and that these children want to start making small changes in their own homes and neighborhoods. I realize that this can be a hard thing for children to do, which is why I think it is so important for children to learn about from their pare...
World Health Organisation (1997). Health and Environment in Sustainable Development : Five years after the Earth Summit.
According to Naess there were three great movements for global responsibility that occurred during the twentieth century. These great movements were social justice, environmental movements and peace (“The Three Great Movements”, Naess 2008). These different views became of interest of a great variety of people that held unique religions, nationalities, worldviews and cultures. The three great movements are all connected to one another in one form or another. For example, war and violence are not compatible with environmental responsibility, and destruction and degradation put on the environment do not coincide with social justice. Equality and liberty cannot be justified when there is violence and war and require respect and relationships that are civil through acts of peace. These three movements all require one central principle, social responsibility. During these movements the first to be initiated and recognized was the environmental movement. At first there was shallow and anthropocentric environmentalism, however environmental movements were supported and strengthened through peace movements and social justice (Naess 2008). Growth in the economy and increased consumption of natural resources are still the greatest value in our society and they are put first and before our environment.
The United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (1992) The Declaration of Rio on Environment and Development [Online] Available at: http://www.unep.org/Documents.multilingual/Default.asp?DocumentID=78&ArticleID=1163
This persuasive speech was given in Rio de Janeiro, and was a plea to the individuals in attendance at the United Nations Earth Summit to recognize how they are contaminating the environment with hopes that these audience members will revise their future proposals.
There are many types of pollution. The main types of pollution are water, air, soil, thermal, radioactive, noise, and light. The topic for this experiment is Water Pollution. Water Pollution became a problem in the 1900’s when water started being treated like sewage. Earth Day was founded by United States Senator Gaylord Nelson on April 22, 1970 because of 1900’s pollution. Water Pollution also affects humans and animals. There was a Cholera outbreak in 1854, before water pollution became a problem, and a Typhoid outbreak in New York from 1900 to 1915. There are multiple possible causes to Water Pollution. Humans let out chemicals into the environment, and when some of those chemicals
By showing the world the severity of our need for conservation, we will be able to save the earth and get the most out of our resources. We need to fix this problem before it becomes uncontrollable to the point of having no resources to supply our needs. By reducing our consumption of resources, we will be able to become closer to fixing the problem of global warming, high gasoline prices and pesticide filled meats. The outcome of respecting our world and “going green” will better how we live our lives, our communities and the environment. The concept of “going green” is a necessity for the future because “our children deserve cities as beautiful as they are.
Keith Douglas Warner with David Decosse authors of Thinking Ethically about the Environment explains that, “Environmental ethics apply ethical thinking to the natural world and the relationship between humans and the earth” (Douglas and Decosse 1). Understanding our environment will probably be the most important part of environmental ethics. By understanding the environment, one is putting one selves in the shoes of something that is relevant to nature. Understanding the struggles and helplessness that nature has will hopefully influence one to take better care of our planet. Feeling sympathy is something everyone needs to express towards planet Earth. Humans are the largest factor on deciding if the planet worsen or prosper. Our planet has nothing to do with how polluted it is, this is truly our
