After learning what a transcendentalist is and what they do i've decided that I wouldn't want to be part of that. A transcendentalist is a philosophy that started in the mid 1800’s that promotes intuitive, spiritual thinking instead of scientific thinking based on material things. Throughout this unit I've learned how to join, their beliefs, negative impacts, and benefits to join. Firstly, If i'd been interested in this type of crowd it wouldn't be that hard to join. Transcendentalist place a importance on individualism, and views society as a corrupt force that needs to be reformed. So you would need to obviously have similar points of views. Some main things they believe in is real truth, spiritual entity, individualism, and nature. They believed that a big reason people feel unhappy or dissatisfied is that they try too hard to conform. In today's society it's hard not to conform, because when we see someone get the new iphone 8, or new style of shoes like vans we feel like we have to get them to. We do this even if we like other things, because that's what's trending and we feel like we have to fit in. Transcendentalist believe we should dump all of those pressures that are making us conform, and do what makes us happy. Like for example if someone is an accountant and finds that boring and life sucking, then they should switch to a job they would love and enjoy like an art critic. They also believe to tell the truth and not to lie, and say whatever you believe you have to say. For them nature is a spiritual force and a source of inspiration. One must go beyond the material to a higher spiritual plane in order to reach basic truths. Which I don't really understand, because when I went outside for a while to walk my dogs all I felt from nature was its cold and windy weather. Some transcendentalist believe that they don't have to follow the laws. They think that they can trust themselves to be their own authority on what is right. Something that Henry David said that I found interesting was, “ [...] unlike those who call themselves no-government men.” From civil disobedience. This shows me that some people don't believe in what the government stands for and what it does for us, so they don't follow by its laws. Another quote that relates to this topic is something Ralph Waldo said, “The best government is that which governs least, [...] the less the government we have the, better.” These quotes really show me how transcendentalist think about our government and the way they treat it in words, and actions they
