Now, having in mind these definitions and the importance of assessment in the academic life, learners should not face it only as the judgments of a particular production in which it may get positive and negative perceptions from others. It is relevant to mention that the focus of this research was to give students voice in the reading assessment process in which they could recognize and overcome difficulties, thus, learners may realize of playing an active role in the assessment process which did not only involve numbers as a result, but it might affect the way of learning by getting students familiar with the reflective practice upon their own processes, through the self- assessment as a self-directed reading strategy to improve their literal reading
It also helps to improve memory. A student is properly geared to focus on the specific area of research by using the Q-question strategy. The R which stand for reflect/relate helps to bridge the gap of old and new information in the memory. A student will always have an accurate fact and current in line with the given area of reasoning. In the end reading will encourage students to read material for both academic reason and for pleasure.
When students engage in metacognition, they (1) come to an understanding of what they understand and; (2) make adjustments in their learning strategies to improve their learning in s... ... middle of paper ... ...alysis of a particular learning situation (Soiferman 2014). The understanding of learning and teaching styles allows students to practice metacognition, recognize when a particular method of learning is creating difficulty, and adjust their learning practices with intentionality (Soiferman 2014). If students have an understanding of their learning style, they can adjust it to their instructors teaching style and learn more efficiently and improve their performance at university. Although it is important to know one’s preferred learning style but it is not necessary. Students can perform well without knowing their preferred learning style, if they are active learners and use metacognition.
8-9). By giving feedback on what was done well and using revision or restatement tactics to point out areas that need correcting, the teacher can focus on the positive and create an encouraging learning environment. A second strategy is the peer review or peer feedback process. Since individuals other than the teacher would become part of the assessment process, it would be necessary for the teaching to provide firm guidance on what constitutes kind and considerate but still meaningful feedback. With this process, students have the opportunity to learn from others as well as apply what they have learned when reading what other students have written.
How People Learn What do we ultimately know about student learning? K. Patricia Cross, Higher Education Professor Emeritus, writes, "What we know about student learning is that students who are actively engaged in learning for deeper understanding are likely to learn more than students not so engaged." So student learning results from student engagement—the combination of time and energy committed. Therefore, if we are to stimulate student learning, we have to persuade our students to commit their time and energy. We must try to help them learn effective time management techniques (by encouraging them to keep on task during in-class workshops and by helping them break down large assignments into manageable pieces), and we must attempt to present issues in a meaningful way.
One of the most important skills that will be developed is that of time keeping and being able to prioritise activities and tasks effectively. Many students find it difficult to organise their social life along with the tasks of handing in assignments and getting into lectures on time, so the idea of list making and setting clear, achievable goals for themselves is a necessity. Dividing goals into key steps, helps the achiever of being able to carry out the task well, and also allows them to be able to reflect upon the their progress both during an after the achieved task. All tasks prepared and given to students during the academic process are provided with a time deadline and it is expected that they abide by this impecably, with unpleasant consequences if they do not. During this time, students learn that without time management skills that they learn within the academic structure it would be very difficult for them to be able to proceed into the working world without basic found skills having penitent consequences if not adhered to.
Metacognition can simply be referred to as higher order thinking which involves active control over the cognitive processes engaged In learning, often simply described as ‘thinking of thinking’. While learning, many people face the task of understanding what was learnt while reading or studying. Metacognition is an effective way of learning as it enlightens the learner to self-awareness and self-monitoring, hereby encouraging planning, setting goals and application of strategies to identified factors and afterwards evaluating the effectiveness of the applied strategies and also achieving the effectiveness of metacognition on academic achievement and sometimes happiness. Metacognition helps individuals overcome certain learning barriers and
Some of these skills are cognitive which involves cognition or thinking, while others are metacognitive involving reflection or thinking about thinking. Strategic readers employ both cognitive and metacognitive skills, including but not limited to, previewing text, understanding text structures, activating prior knowledge, making connections, making predictions, drawing inferences, summarizing, and monitoring comprehension (Tompkins, 2011). One of the first things strategic readers do before they begin reading is to preview the text. Previewing helps students to learn better by ... ... middle of paper ... ...skills automatically throughout the reading process, as described above. Through direct explanation and modeling using these tools teachers can successfully aid students in the process of become a strategic reader.
In view of Abbott (1994), learning is a reflective activity which lets the learner to draw upon previous experiences to understand and appraise the present. According to Psychology Dictionary, learning skills is a set of skills used in the process of acquiring new knowledge. As a student, I do agree that the complete Learning Skills course will helps the student to evolve their study strategies and academic writing skills with a few reasons to support my stand. Firstly from Learning Skills course, I have learnt how to manage my learning such as coping with learning and the personal learning styles. From that only I realized that how is my personal learning styles, which are active, sensing, visual and global.
Prioritizing my time is a task that I need to work on, turning things on time and keeping up to date with assignments is difficult. I usually procrastinate and leave things for the last-minute, and causes my work to be less effective than what I can carry out. Studying for tests is a struggle, because I get distracted easily and get frustrated with all the amount of work ,so I leave the work for later. Some management strategies I will use, are breaking up large project into pieces and when I have a difficult time getting started I will do the easiest task first. I prioritize my life with most important to least important.
