Looking back on my first day of class, I remember being extremely nervous to be attending a real college class. English has always intimidated me, with trying to wrap my mind around all of the rules revolving around writing papers and grammar. Needless to say, I had a difficult time with this subject. Now that the semester is finally ending, I feel so much more confident in my ability to write papers. I also feel a vast improvement in remembering grammar rules. As with any class, there are many components that come together for a student to be successful in English 111. Participation, Progress, performance, as well as processes in this class are four major key components to be victorious in this class. I attended every English 111 class period this semester, and this resulted in me learning that just showing up for class can help tremendously with understanding the material being covered. It is also very important to come to class prepared and ready to learn. I had no troubles in bringing all the materials that were needed through out the semester because it was clearly expected of me in the syllabus. Active engagement with others is also important in English 111. For example, just in the first sentence I wrote "Isn 't it a little bizarre how you can grow up side by side with someone and turn out completely different from them?" I now know that starting an essay with a question is unacceptable and not allowed. In my next essay, a rhetorical analysis, I wrote "It does not make sense for people to die unnecessarily if there is a way to easily save their lives." This is an improvement because this statement is not a question, but it still grabs the readers attention, persuading them to continue. I also believe my conventions in my writing have improved as well. In my pre-test essay I made multiple mistakes regarding punctuation. I stated, " Briar and I may have different hobbies but we both enjoy watching kids movies together." I omitted a comma that was necessary in this sentence, but in my rhetorical analysis I felt like I made a vast improvement with my punctuation. For example, I wrote, "Mackay also appeals to the reader 's sympathies numerous times in her work, by explaining what patients who are receiving dialysis are going through." I remembered to insert the comma in the correct place, if this was for the pre test essay, I probably would have accidently not put a comma in that sentence. Performance is a
