The Importance of Standard Nomenclature and Assertive Communication in the Professional Healthcare Environment
Effective, unambiguous communication is a fundamental professional skill not only in paramedicine (Tavares & Mausz, 2015; Williams, Onsman, & Brown, 2010), but also in essentially every other medical field (Vermeir et al., 2015). Therefore, subskills such as rapport building, assertiveness and active listening are of paramount importance in contributing to healthy workplace relationships (Grover, 2005). For example, when I started my first part time job in the food industry, I quickly discovered that it was better to simply speak up when I did not know or understand a particular aspect of my task instead of trying to bluff my way through it. This was one aspect of good and honest assertive communication A. Hodgson specified as being important. Additionally, as a sporting umpire, assertive verbal communication was an extremely important skill. A crucial component of this was sending consistently clear messages by using the standard terms and nomenclature. Moreover, I have participated in several team environments and have discovered that it is important to monitor your interactions to ensure that you are correctly balancing your output of first and second person communications. This is because these ratios are often different to those found in more common situations such as casual one-on-one conversations (Neuman & Wright, 1999). Hodgson, I have reconstructed some of my ideas concerning successful communication in the professional medical environment. Even though the field of cytology and my future area of work as a paramedic differ in various respects, effective communication is nevertheless a key foundational skill in the extensive majority of health careers (Leonard et al., 2004; Stewart, 1995). Thus, I have been able to reform some of my old views and even form new ones as a result of the concepts my interviewee told me about. Although prior to the interview I would have agreed that the standardisation of terms was important, I had never seriously considered the integrally essential role consistent nomenclature has to play in the health field. I can honestly say that as a result of my interview I will carry this new mindset with me into my future practice. For example, the use of standard terms will be vital when writing case notes which may potentially be used as legal evidence or as a part of a patient’s medical file. In the case of the latter, these records could be an important piece of the puzzle for practitioners who are trying to diagnose a seemingly mystery illness. Therefore because it is imperative that notes are detailed, accurate and clear, standard nomenclature significantly aids these endeavours. It is important to consider that communication is not just verbal in form. One study suggests that the majority of communication is more affected by body language, attitude, and tone, than based on the actual words said (O’Daniel, 2008). Interprofessional communication is one of the main cornerstones of effective and sustainable collaboration. It involves observable exchanges of information and knowledge that include subtle and sometimes overt demonstrations of attitudes, personal values and behaviours (Morison, 2007; Suter et al., 2009; Gordon et al., 2011; Campbell, 2014). Individuals need to listen to each other and collaborate in order to develop mutual knowledge, which enhances communication. In part one, Petersen paints a picture of how he became interested in the topic of communication. He also describes major problems that all communicators have in common. Since he grew up in an environment full of communication deficiencies, it drove him to clarify issues that were common to all communicators. One of the foundational concepts to Petersen’s book is the nature of communication. Petersen called communication the lubrication designed to keep functions of stomach, heart, and head working separately and together. The stomach is the source of feeling words, the heart is the source of perspective words, and the head is the source of our perception of facts. Without these three elements working together, communication becomes deficient. In my experience and understanding how this concept of thinking and feeling affects mine and others people relationships goes a long way towards reducing disagreement and disconnection.

Qualitative research is regarded as an inductive process, which within natural settings attempts to produce insights on the subjective experiences, meanings, practices and point of views of those involved (Craig & Smyth, 2007). The aim here was to investigate factors influencing the communication styles used by the radiographers, therefore, allowing a better understanding to patient-centred care within diagnostic radiography.
Aside from being an expert juggler, the ability to work well with others is a crucial part of most social interactions, as we are forced to interact with individuals in our social and personal realm. Active listening and an open dialogue are the keys to good communication. This has helped me to fulfill my obligations as a team member.

Reflecting upon the weakness indicated from the PAMS assessment there is room for improvement. Furthermore, developing skills in communicating with subordinates is crucial to narrowing the gaps of other deficiencies, such as, the adaptive behavior in communication discussed in the former. By being more aware of an employee’s methods of communication, and by developing proficient communication strategies, observing effective or ineffective communications tools, and seeking feedback from said subordinates are generalized methods that can be implemented when improving upon the adaptive skills of communication. Communication is one of the most important factors in our lives. It dictates the relationships formed with the individuals in personal and professional lives. Effective communication provides a foundation for trust and respect to grow. It also helps better understand a person and the context of the conversation. Individuals often believe that their communication skills are much better than what they actually are. Communication appears effortless; however, much of what two people discuss gets misunderstood, thus leading to conflicts and distress. To communicate effectively, one must understand the emotion behind the information being said. Knowing how to communicate effectively can improve relationships one has at home, work and in social affairs. Understanding communication skills such as; listening, non-verbal communication and managing stress can help better the relationships one has with others.
As in all aspects of personal and professional life, having effective communication is a key element of success. Effective communication can benefit your relationships with people. By conveying your message and integrating them as a member of the team and not just a subordinate leads to better production. By effectively communicating you can clearly define job responsibilities and expectations. The better you are able to communicate the less likely organizational turnover of personnel will occur. Senior level executives and human resources managers are stressing the importance of communication and providing more training for mid-level management. Irrespective of the environment in which one works, communication is always vital and a key factor of success. Communication happens both physically and verbally and is absolutely essential if you want to inform someone about something. ‘Loud shouting and even violence are symptoms of the ailment, not remedies.’ (Adair 2009: 3). Communication has two main components; sending out a message to someone, and ensuring the message is received correctly to the other member of the conversation. It is thus fair to say speaking and listening are vital to effective communication. This essay will initially introduce me as a student, and my career. I will give a simple SWOT analysis of me and will then go on and breakdown the different methods and techniques of effective communication. Finally, I will talk about how effective communication is needed in my current position, as well as the future.
