The Importance of Sleep Sleep is not a luxury, it is a necessity to allow our bodies to function properly. Sleep is a time for the body to undergo repair and purification. Humans spend a third of their lives asleep, so all that shut-eye must be doing something positive for the body and brain (Robbins, 2015). Good mental and physical health depends on an adequate amount of sleep. Sleep involved two biological rhythms, the sleep/wake homeostasis and circadian rhythm and they are usually guides by the daily light to dark rotation in twenty-four hours. Sleep/wake homeostasis constructs the balance between sleep and being awake, which is determined by whether the body got an adequate amount of sleep or not. There is a recommended range for each age group, but these may vary depending on if the individual is suffering from a sleep disorder. Those who consistently sleep outside of the normal range may have some significant health issues and they could be compromising their health. For young adults, or the traditional college student, the recommended amount is seven to nine hours of sleep.
