The Downsides of Single-Gender Classrooms

Some people agree that single-gender classrooms are good for students. Before single-gender classrooms became known, there were no arguments about anything, such as cost efficient and taking kids away from the opposite gender. Before starting a program that segregates students, there needs to be a very good reason why it should be done (Kim). Schools should not promote single-gender classrooms because they are causing more arguments rather than helping America. Ann Kim states, “The ACLU of Maine is demanding that the Sanford School district end its single-gender classes, saying the program appears to violate federal law by relaying on harmful gender stereotypes”. Studies have shown that single-gender classrooms make the students grades higher and students are more focus in class (Schultz). Although grades would be higher, it would hurt the children in the future because they would not know how to deal with the opposite sex in a professional setting. Natasha Lindstrom states, “Some critics argue single-sex classes perpetuate gender stereotypes and don’t prepare students for interaction in the workplace”. For example, if a male says something derogatory to a female in a business environment, the consequences would be disastrous; this could have been avoided if the male learned how to professionally interact with females. Matt Kwong writes, “They’re learning how to interact with each other, work together, collaborate, problem-solve, how to be respectful to members of the opposite sex”. This is a very true statement concerning traditional classes because students will learn more in a classroom with both genders; it makes the learning environment more interesting. Schools should do more research before sending out letters to parents about single-gender classrooms. Single-gender classrooms are not healthy for students; no matter the age, they need to be able to work with the opposite gender. When you place girls and boys in separate classes, you’re basically telling the opposite gender one is better at that subject (Schultz).
