“What now, how will I carry on, will I ever be the same, or should I just give up?” For most of us these questions will never come up in our lifetime but for some this becomes reality. Life is sometimes unpredictable and in an instant it can completely be turned upside down. It’s safe to say that most of us take for granted the simple things in life that come naturally, such as the ability to communicate with one another or the ability to function fine or gross motor skills in order to do everyday tasks. The weight of this challenge can be daunting. I have witnessed this first-hand as a friend of someone that is living through this dramatic change in life. A profession that will inspire me to be my very best, not only in my field of healthcare but to the patient. A desire for a challenging environment and the ability to make a difference in patient’s lives. After months of research and shadowing various healthcare professions it was crystal clear to me that a career in Occupational Therapy fulfills these goals that I laid out for myself. This career path would allow my passion and desire to make a difference in the lives of others as well as challenge me intellectually into the future. My volunteer experience at Muscular Dystrophy Association camp and Adaptive gymnastics has help me realize that the ability to give back to others in need is extremely important to me. While observing the Occupational Therapist perform various fine motor control and hand strengthening exercises this enabled me to see the outcomes my friend had achieved. From a personal perspective my passion lies in helping others achieve their goals through positive reinforcement, compassion and the desire to see them achieve success no matter how big or small. My experience has been voluntary, working with patients with disabilities in various settings though different organizations. Applying these ideas that I have learned through my education as well as shadowing several Occupational Therapists have enabled me to utilize them in real life situations. This experience has clearly defined my desire and goal of a long-term career in Occupational Therapy, to enable others to live their life to the fullest no matter what illness, injury or disability. Rockhurst’s Occupational Therapy program is appealing to me because of the international fieldwork and service trips to Ecuador and St. Lucia. These international opportunities would help fulfill my long-term goal of working as an Occupational Therapist in third world countries.
