Synthetic Polymers in Cosmetics are Inevitable
Hannah Sajnendra
Synthetic polymers in cosmetics are inevitable. However, despite benefits, they can also be harmful to skin and especially the environment.
Cosmetic manufacturers now resort to synthetic polymers instead of natural polymers (AnneMarie Skincare, 2017 ). Synthetic Polymers are used instead of natural polymers in cosmetics for many reasons. Natural polymers are biodegradable due to their natural chemical composition, whereas synthetic polymers such as nylon and polystyrene are plastics. They aren't biodegradable.
Three types of synthetic polymers are used in cosmetic products. These are thickeners, emulsifiers, and delivery systems.
Thickeners are an aqueous solution that

There are many factors which contribute to the use of synthetic polymers in cosmetics. Synthetic polymers are inexpensive to manufacture, compared to natural polymers. Maintaining the integrity of natural polymers can be expensive and as a result they often don’t have longevity due to natural biodegradation processes( Polymer solutions, 2017).
Synthetic Polymers also have stable composition and are much more resistant to natural environmental stresses. Compared to natural polymers, their chemical composition does not change readily due to changes in environment. Increased stability of Synthetic Polymers increases the shelf life of the products. Increased shelf life means cosmetic companies and manufacturers gain more profit, as their products don't expire or degrade as quickly as it would had natural polymers been utilised. Hence the use of synthetic polymers is increasing within the beauty and cosmetic industries (Anjali Patil,

Such as increasing the performance of the cosmetic product. Another advantage of synthetic polymers is that they have a broad chemical spectrum. Their chemical composition can range from a particular type of alkenes such as alpha-olefins, which are organic compounds (Wikipedia, 2017 ) to synthetic materials such as silicones (Anjali Patil, 2013). There are many factors within a synthetic polymer which contribute to its favourable performance within cosmetic products. This includes its polymerization properties which affect the performance of the
Synthetic polymers are used by chemist to make many everyday items that we are frequently using without even realising. A common product that the use of synthetic polymers have been introduced to is various types of cosmetics and personal care items. Synthetic polymers are currently being used in cosmetics and questioned whether they are either inevitable or ineffective in their use. Synthetic polymers are already being used in cosmetics this meaning the effects of synthetic polymers must either
an ecosystem, increases (Sudesh & Iwata, 2008). Synthetic polymers are recognized as the most serious polluters in the category of a solid waste, whereas the large number of this kind of materials is resistant to physical and chemical degradation (Leja & Lewandowicz, 2010). Due to good barrier performances, polymer materials have an intensive application in a packaging material production. It is assumed that packaging materials produced from polymer materials make more than 50 % of total packaging
DEFINITION : “ Poly means many and mer means parts, so polymer means many parts. Polymers are made from many small molecules held together through covalent bonding ” The small molecules which form polymers are called monomers. In other words monomers are the building block of polymers. Hundreds and thousands of monomers combine together to form a large molecule of polymer. A polymer can be a three dimensional network ( repeating units linked together left and right, front and back, up
Petroleum by Shivkiran Anil Nambiar! for Mr. Tony Burton Introduction to Petroleum Petroleum is a natural substance that occurs beneath the earth’s surface. Petroleum is made of decomposed organic substances and hydrocarbons of different atomic weights. ! Petroleum is the name commonly used for presenting both unprocessed crude oil and the products of petroleum that are made up of refined crude oil. ! As a fossil fuel, petroleum is constantly being formed naturally below our feet in the fossil
electrophoresis is significant because it has given scientists insight on what cells cause certain diseases and has led to advancements in DNA and fingerprint identification. My experiment will use gel electrophoresis to compare samples of natural and synthetic food dyes. The background for this experiment broaches the following subjects: inventors, real-world uses, necessary components, separation, and information on food dyes. Electrophoresis was first developed in the 1930s by Tiselius. It has since
Moreover in general, the biomaterials can be further categorized into: polymers, metals, ceramics, and composites. 1. Polymers: A great variety of polymers are used as biomaterials in medicine. Their applications vary from facial prostheses to tracheal tubes, from dentures to hip and knee joints and from kidney and liver parts to heart components. Polymeric materials are also used for medical adhesives and sealants and are also used for coatings that perform a range of functions. 2. Metals: As
Synthetic plastics are used widely in food packaging, detergents, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and other chemicals’ packaging. Almost 30% of the synthetic plastics are used for packaging applications in the world and this rate is expanding at 12% per annum. They have replaced traditionally used papers and cellulose products for
One research done in organic chemistry is related to cosmetics. Organic chemistry is a vital part in creating cosmetics. By researching how the skin reacts to the products, changes can be made by chemists to address certain problems. The fact that without organic chemistry we might not have makeup is a huge reason why it is the best branch

Key words: allyl sucrose, allyl chloride, sucrose Introduction: Allyl sucrose is used for different applications like; coating material, medicines, cosmetics, epoxy resins, etc. [1]. These compounds can be used as film-forming materials/plastic compositions
Hello. Today I will be talking to you all about silicone textured breast implants. Before I start, I want to mention that there have been about 1,500 known cases of BIA-ALCL, mostly in textured breast implants, around the world. There have been over 35 million people who have had breast augmentation surgeries and therefore there is a small risk of experiencing this type of lymphoma. Although that said, this illness is quite severe and if you or individuals you know are interested in getting breast
Tissue engineering is a field which involves biology, medicine, and engineering. It aims at restoring, maintaining and enhancing tissue and organ function by implanting natural, synthetic or semi-synthetic tissue and bioartificial organs that are fully functional from the beginning, or that grow into the required functionality (Nature Publishing Group., 2014). It is emerging as a potential alternative or complimentary solution for organ failure. Basic Tissue Engineering Principles (Castells-Sala

percentage of mucilage which swell when hydrated [10,33]. Kumar et al used fenugreek mucilage at multiple percentages to prepare metformin FDT and compared it to other SDs. At 4%, the mucilage gave better disintegration time than the most widely used synthetic SDs like CCS [34]. Avachat et al reported the use of of fenugreek husk for granulation [35]. 1.3. Soy polysaccharide (Emcosoy®) It doesn’t contain any starch or sugar and used in nutritional products (figure 4). It has a good swelling ability
1. Describe the use of lime in agriculture. -- The term lime maintains many meanings. It can refer to powdered limestone (calcium carbonate), a type of “quicklime” scientifically named calcium carbonate that decomposes to make calcium oxide upon heating, and calcium hydroxide; all of which are often recalled as being synonyms to the word lime and are used so accordingly. All of these variations are used for the exact same purpose; they all raise the pH of the soil in order to increase any possible
explained (2015). To achieve each characteristic in one bottle of nail polish different ingredients must be utilized. As Secret Ingredient: Nail Polish (2011, [online]) has stated, “Nail polish usually consists of four major types of ingredients: polymers, plasticizers, pigments and solvents.” Each of these ingredients contribute to the four primary qualities of nail polish. Besides the four major ingredients, there are a long list of additional
