Personal values are important in every person’s life, no matter their profession. They exemplify who we are. These values can provide us with a path for the type of life we aspire to lead. Through personal values we can figure out what is important to us and use that to have a successful life, whether this is emotionally, financially or in any other ways. Many institutions have core values that exemplify what the institution as a whole stands for. Institutions use their core values to guide their decisions and they are shared, adopted and believed by the entire institution. Respect, in my opinion, is something that is earned through being an honest person, behave in a reliable way and also show respect to other. Being a person with integrity is something one is as a person and it shows through everything we do. If one’s behavior matches their beliefs, people will respect them for who they are. Responsibility is being accountable for one’s actions, no matter if they are good or bad. By being a responsible person, others can depend on you and respect you without questioning your integrity. These two values are important to me because I strive to be a respectful and respected person, as well as responsible every day through my actions. I want to earn people’s respect by showing them that my morals match my actions and also through taking responsibility for my actions when necessary. By making the poor decision of drinking and driving, I stained my credibility. I am a responsible person and that is something that has to show in everything I do. Even though I took responsibility of my actions, not letting it happen in the first place is a better way to show responsibility. Also, in order to be a respectable person one has to act ethically, which involves following rules and standards for right conduct. By not following the rules, of not drinking and driving I went not only against my own personal values, but also against the University’s. The University of Missouri’s values as mentioned earlier are Respect, Responsibility, Discovery and Excellence. The value of responsibility was compromised because I did not acknowledge the consequences of what might happen if I drink and drive before leaving for the bars with the keys to my car in my purse. It is important to take responsibility afterwards, but by taking responsibility for the actions that can come out of going out and drinking, I could have avoided making that bad decision. Through this decision, I got setback from achieving excellence, or the best that I can be as a student in this case. DWI arrests can show on records, as well as being on disciplinary probation which can affect getting internships and jobs in
