In the book, A Long Walk to Water, Linda Sue Park illustrates the many struggles of the lost boys in Sudan, focusing on Salva Dut Ariik. Salva lives in Sudan during 1985. Park also shows you the life of a girl, Nya, who also lives in Sudan, but in 2008. Salva and Nya face many, many hardships throughout the book. Nevertheless, they persevere. Over and over again, these two children are faced with challenges, but, they overcome them. The book shows you about Salva’s struggles, Nya’s hardships, and the Civil War in Sudan. Salva’s hardships are a main part of the book. He is constantly struggling to get through the next problem in his life. Salva walks alone for days before he finally finds a companion, Marial. She has to walk to the pond near her house everyday. The walk takes at least the whole morning, and there are thorns on the path. Without proper shoes, the thorns often stick Nya in the foot, but Nya has to push through the pain. “She pressed her lips together against the pain.” (Park, page 8). In addition, the water she does get is contaminated with disease and is making her family sick. In order to keep the water from having worms, they will have to boil the water for 200 seconds before drinking it. “Her sickness came from the water, the nurse explained, she should only drink good clean water.” (Park, page 45). This is a problem for Nya because once she gets to the pond, she has to immediately drink to keep her going. Nya also wasn’t able to go to school up until the end of the book.
