There is a growing need for professionals in the healthcare field of anesthesiology due to the influx of patients requiring medical intervention and surgical services. One field in particular, nurse anesthetists is a rapidly growing field with the need for 100,000 or more practitioners each year. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, nurse anesthetists work under anesthesiologists and provide care before, during, and after a surgical procedure. They are also known as CRNA’s or Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist. In order to become a nurse anesthetist, you must first obtain a bachelor’s degree of science in nursing (BSN). After you complete that challenge, you are required to work in a critical care unit for two years prior to going …show more content…
This applies to being a nurse anesthetist because without nurse anesthetists, there would not be enough medical professionals to administer anesthesia services to all patients in need. Therefore, the maximum number of surgeries that could take place at the same time would plummet. Nurse anesthetists contribute to the overall operation of society by increasing the number of available personnel and therefore allowing there to be multiple surgeries occurring at the same time, which in turn allows for more patients’ lives to be saved and more successful outcomes. Majority of hospitals only have two to three anesthesiologists on staff. A member of the anesthesiology team, whether an anesthesiologist or nurse anesthetist, must be bed side with the patient from the beginning to the end of a procedure. It is impossible for an anesthesiologist to be in multiple places at once. A very limited number of surgeries could take place daily if there were not nurse anesthetists. Without nurse anesthetists, who would monitor the patients before, during, and after surgery if an anesthesiologist was with another patient and unavailable? This would be considered manifest functions of nurse anesthetists. Without them, it is recognized that there would not be enough people in the hospital to …show more content…
It is very important that a patient is comfortable and can trust the nurse anesthetist before going under anesthesia. On the micro level, nurse anesthetists interact with patients and their families. There are face to face discussions between them pre and post operatively. It is pertinent that the nurse anesthetist is outgoing and easy to talk to so that the patient is not uncomfortable before going into surgery (Nurse Anesthetists). Some important symbols that nurse anesthetists represent are comfort, health, and trust. If a patient is uncomfortable or experiencing anxiety, it could result in an increased heart rate, an increase in blood pressure, and other health complications. Consequently, it is very important that nurse anesthetists come in with a positive attitude. The symbol of health is due to the life of that patient being in their hands. It is up to the nurse anesthetist to evaluate the patient at all times to ensure there is no harm or complications that result from the procedure. Trust is also an important symbol because a patient has to be able have confidence and trust that the nurse anesthetist treating them is experienced, knowledgeable, and competent in providing their care and performing all of their duties. If a patient does not trust the nurse anesthetist, it could result in the procedure having to be postponed in order to find another nurse
Although nurses do not wield the power of doctors in hospital settings, they are still able to effectively compensate for a doctor’s deficits in a variety of ways to assure patient recovery. Nurses meet a patient’s physical needs, which assures comfort and dignity Nurses explain and translate unfamiliar procedures and treatments to patients which makes the patient a partner in his own care and aids in patient compliance. Nurses communicate patient symptoms and concerns to physicians so treatment can be altered if necessary and most importantly, nurses provide emotional support to patients in distress.

There is a shortage of all health care professions throughout the United States. One shortage in particular that society should be very concerned about is the shortage of Registered Nurses. Registered Nurses make up the single largest healthcare profession in the United States. A registered nurse is a vital healthcare professional that has earned a two or four year degree and has the upper-most responsibility in providing direct patient care and staff management in a hospital or other treatment facilities (Registered Nurse (RN) Degree and Career Overview., 2009). This shortage issue is imperative because RN's affect everyone sometime in their lifetime. Nurses serve groups, families and individuals to foster health and prevent disease.
In this experience I learned to always keep patients safety as my priority and how important it is to advocate for them. It is important to check paper work even though it is time consuming for the nurse, however it prevents any medical errors from happening. Many times doctors and anesthesiologist want to continue with surgeries because they do not want to schedule the patients for a different time, but there are times patient cannot receive the procedure due to eating, glucose, or potassium levels being out of range and this cases the nurses advocates by giving her opinion and protecting the patient.
Brody, Michael, and Donald Martin. “The Role of Anesthesiologists.” Physicians Protecting Patients. N.p. N.d. Web. October 21, 2015. An anesthesiologist is a physician who has received at least 8 years of schooling and has completed a residency program dealing with anesthesiology. Now, a licensed physician, an anesthesiologist deals with the administration of anesthesia during many medical procedures, including surgical or obstetric procedures, and pain management for acute and chronic illnesses, or cancer related pain. Anesthesiologists are also in charge of “anesthesia care teams” that include the anesthesiologist, an anesthesia assistant, certified registered nurse anesthetist, and an anesthesia technician. As the leader of the care team, the anesthesiologist is responsible for assessing the patient before, during, and after medical procedures, as well as developing and monitoring performance and quality of practices and standards in regards to administering anesthesia. The entirety of
I consider anesthesiology as a unique area in healthcare requiring specialized skills and knowledge. An anesthesiologist assistant career involves working as a trained non-physician anesthesia provider in cooperation with and under the supervision of an anesthesiologist. Activities include health history taking, carrying out care plans for anesthesia, preoperative physical examination, administering medication, supervising recovery and other responsibilities as assigned by the anesthesiologist. An admission into the anesthesiology assistant program would provide me with the advanced education and prerequisite clinical training that would enable me participate in these patient care roles. I am aware that the training programs for anesthesiology assistants are comparatively few as compared to many other healthcare career options. An admission into an anesthesiology assistant program would represent for me an invaluable opportunity to enter into a unique and challenging area in healthcare, and one in which I am very eager to participate
So what’s a CRNA? A CRNA is a Registered Nurse that has completed a CRNA master level or higher program. CRNA is an acronym, which stands for “Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist”. These nurses must have a minimum, one year of emergency room or ICU experience (depending on the program both or one can be accepted) and must also hold a current and unencumbered RN licensure with an undergraduate bachelorette degree prior
...ing education courses and renew certification. When they are considered competent enough to deliver anesthesia, they must also be able to deal effectively with the daily changes and challenges that a hospital environment can create. They must also be able to “stomach” many types of sense triggers. Although they are one of the top paid nursing practices, they have to endure stress throughout their whole career, starting with the educational aspects.
With all of the different specialties in healthcare, some get overlooked or may be under the radar. An uncommon and often disregarded career choice in healthcare is that of a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or a Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice. Although not many people know about these healthcare careers, they play a vital role within the healthcare team. This field is growing rapidly and the likelihood of coming into contact with a nurse anesthetist during a hospital stay is on the rise. Knowing the history, education, responsibilities, and career outlook for a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist or a Doctorate of Nurse Anesthesia Practice can aide in understanding their very specific role in the care of patients.
Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetists (CRNA) are high trained nurses who use their developed training in the use of anesthesia to alleviate patient pain and discomfort due to medical procedures. Nurse anesthetists have been providing anesthesia for more than 125 years, dating back to the early Civil War. ("Nurse anesthetist," 2014). They undergo rigorous training post nursing licensure that allows them to hold a high position in the nursing field working beside surgeons, anesthesiologist, dentists, podiatrist, and many other skilled healthcare professionals ("Nurse anesthetist," 2014). Pain management is one of the main aspects in any procedure, if not the most important to the patient, therefore giving nurse anesthetists a wide spectrum of work settings in the medical field that they can practice in.
It is predicted that in ten years the job availability will increase by 31% (“Anesthesiologist” 1) There are 170,400 jobs available as a nurse practitioner in the United States as of 2014 (1). The reason why there is such a high demand for this career is because new practices, hospitals, and doctors offices are always opening. Also, there is a regular need for a trained medical professional to assist. The top employers for this field are general, medical, and surgical hospitals with 1,458,520 nurses hired (“Top” 1). The best area with the highest salary for nurse practitioners is in the Metropolitan area, which receives more than $100,000 a year. However, nurse practitioners and family nurse practitioners make an average of $98,190 a year, but it can vary widely depending on a variety of factors” (“Salaries” 1). Then, if one wants to specialize in a nurse practitioner career they make a reasonable amount more. For example, a Certified Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) makes an average annual salary of $157,140 (1). This career has the potential of making extremely great money, one just has to work for
Everyday, people go through surgery and require a specialist that will monitor their surgery as well as give them what they need to be able to persevere the pain, which is exactly what anesthesiologists do. In order for the patients to be able to get into surgery and deal with the agonizing aches after the abscission, anesthesiologists have to give the sufferer the proper treatment before and after the surgery. Overall, anesthesiologists must be highly educated in both medicine and communication, they need to be able to give the patient the right amount of medicine as well as speak with the family of patients and other doctors to inform them all with what will be done during the surgery, and they need to be able to properly assist the surgeons during operations.
One of the many categories would be that of the circulating nurse. Ensuring that the operating room is set up correctly based on the preference of the surgeon, the circulating nurse makes sure all the necessary equipment’s are in place, functioning appropriately, likewise ready to go. In addition, the circulating nurse also verifies the patient identity, surgical site, and consent with the surgeon upon entering the operating room to make sure that they are all the same page, before proceeding with the schedule procedure. Yet another function of the circulating nurse is to make sure that the patient is positioned correctly on the surgical table, hooking up the basic suctions needed, and assisting the anesthesiologist or anesthetist during intubation. Moreover, monitoring the overall condition of the
Usually, they take you through procedures like surgery or any work you are getting done. They make sure you and your family understand your procedure before it happens. Also, they do your post-operation care, thus helping you and your family through a tough time in life. In the article, "The importance of an RN in your care" it says “…Registered nurses can really be a great asset, not only to the doctor but especially to the patients”. The doctor does help but a nurse helps with adding more assistance in the stay. They try to give you the best possible

Hamlin (2010) further states that RNs may be required to provide emotional support during the induction phase of anaesthesia.
