Mandibular movements are changes that occur in position of the mandible. These movements are essential in every human's life, mandibular movements represent the actions of chewing, mastication, swallowing, speaking and it also have a clear role in face appearance and facial reactions. Studying these movements give us the chance to understand the mechanism of work of TMJ, differentiate between normal and abnormal movements, classify the disease that can occur to this joint and treatment of certain diseases. Mandibular movement is multifactorial process as many elements regulate jaw motion, the first element is the neuromuscular role as it is programmed event residing in 'chewing center' located in brain stem, second element is the influence …show more content…

contraction and relaxation and ligaments that allow temporomandibular movements in several direction like opening and closing or protrusion and retrusion or lateral movements. In order to understand the mandibular movements we should know and understand the basic positions of TMJ, the most important basic positions of mandible in relation to the maxilla are: -Rest position: which is assumed when the head is in an upright position and the related muscles are in equilibrium in tonic contraction and the condyle in an unstrained position, it is non-contact position, -Centric occlusion: it is the maximum intercuspation of teeth, - Centric relation: Dawson(7) define it as the most superior or posterior position of the condyle to the maxilla(articular eminence and fossa). Mandibular movements occurs as a complex series of interrelated three-dimensional rotational and translational activities, it is determined by the combined and simultaneous activities of both temporomandibular …show more content…

The movements of the mandible is limited in all direction by determinants, and any movement of the mandible is multifactorial as it depends on three main elements which are neuromuscular elements, relationship of the opposing teeth and the anatomy and physiology of TMJ. In order to understand more this movements you should analyze it using the help of the anatomy and mechanism of movements and the condyl-disk alignment. Finally we should consider it during construction of complete denture as the mandibular movements and the complete denture affect each other. Mandibular movement is one of the most important factors that could help the dentist in several branches in dentistry major like oral surgery, orthodontic and
