Malnutrition is an unhealthy condition that one faces from not eating enough micronutrient foods. The World Food Programme defines a malnourished person who “has difficulty doing normal things such as growing and resisting disease.” People who suffer from malnutrition becomes underweight and micronutrient – deficient. Famine leads to malnutrition. Without food, people starve and ends up dying. It is important to have enough nutrients because it helps your body to function effectively. In many developing countries, famine and malnutrition is a serious global health issue because the government fails to take care of people properly.

According to the World Health Organization, it states iron, vitamin A and zinc are factors of a weak immune system. Iron plays a huge role in cognitive development. It is essential to maintain sufficient amounts of iron because children develop cognitive skills in school. Zinc contributes to immune and growth implications especially in young children. When the body does not receive enough zinc it puts people at a greater risk. More than half of the population in South Africa are living under poor circumstances and worries that they would starve to death. According to Hidden Hunger in South Africa, the author interviewed many people to find out what factors led to food insecurity and hunger. Studies show South Africa’s unemployment rate is 25% and over 15 million people receive social grants to support themselves and their family. People who have high pay in employment had access to nutritious food to maintain a healthy life. However, not many South Africans found work which reduces stability of access to food. A member of the community comments, “We go hungry on a regular basis, mainly because of a shortage of money. We spend days and sometimes even weeks without proper nutritious food in our homes.” This shows the amount of suffering many had. Women participants reveals they face hunger more than men. This is due to the difference in income. Most women in the community agreed that they are highly responsible for feeding and taking care of their family. Additionally, if a member of the family becomes sick, money is needed to be spent on the sick. It is very important to have enough nutrition for a growing teenager as it helps to develop and strengthen the bones along with growth and development (“Adolescent and School Health.”). Nutrition is very vital for the growing body as it helps prevent certain diseases and helps give the proper development and nourishment (HAGIKALFA). There are multiple nutrients that help maintain development and nutrition such as carbohydrates, protein, fat, vitamins, minerals, and water. If there was a lack of nutrition in a growing teenager, the teenager will not be able to have enough nutrition to grow and they will be more prone to sickness and diseases (“Hunger and Malnutrition.”). A malnourished teenager will may end up having muscle weakness, fatigue, dizziness, fragile bones, tooth decay, and much more (“Hunger and Malnutrition.”).
Imagine your skin tightening around your body to the point that you see your veins, no fats or muscles, the foul odor that comes from your mouth, your eye sockets sunken in, your eyes bulging out, the visibility of your collar and chest bones, your stomach bloated, and your body eating itself. There are many different kinds of effects that come from not consuming the right amount of the nutrients everyday. Receiving the right amount is key especially for children ages zero to three years old. Muhammad Yunus, a civil society leader and Nobel Peace Prize recipient, once said, “Once poverty is gone, we’ll need to build museums to display its horrors to future generations. They’ll wonder why poverty continued so long in human society — how a few people could live in luxury while billions dwelt in misery, deprivation and despair.” Hunger can be defined as the physical state of desiring food. Hunger may ultimately lead to malnutrition, where one is unable to eat sufficiently enough to meet basic nutritional needs. According to the World Food Programme (2014), hunger and malnutrition are in fact the number one risk to health worldwide — even greater than the combination of AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis. There are over 842 million undernourished people who are suffering from hunger and malnutrition worldwide, everyday. That means that one in eight people do not receive enough food to be healthy and lead active lives (World Food Programme, 2014). Fortunately, hunger and malnutrition are easily solvable, though everyone must work together to permanently bring an end to it.
Hunger is traditionally described as needing something to eat and is most commonly visually represented as a complete absence of food. Yet the issue of hunger is much more multi-faceted, involving both malnutrition and undernourishment. Undernourishment occurs when people have food but their intake does not meet daily caloric needs for their body. Millions of people die each year, all over the world because of hunger and disease, many of whom are children (Global issues, 2010). Millions of other people suffer because of hunger, many of whom are in Sub-Saharan Africa and Asia. However, there are several thousand tones of food that is wasted every year. This occurs when people through away food, during harvest, during storage and when crop is destroyed by pests, insects, diseases and animals. Food wastage in the poor countries is due to lack of technology and infrastructure and result to as much as quarter of harvest getting lost (Global issues, 2010).
