Michael Pollan makes arguments concerning the eating habits of the average American. Pollan suggests, in spite of our cultural norms, we should simply “Eat food. Not too much. Mostly Plants.”
This method is usually carried out on ready to eat food and processed meat and poultry. This method is a proven way to extend shelf life by killing microorganisms and pathogens, which are the reason processed meat such as deli meats last so long. However, there are negative effects of this method. There is a change in nutritional value and sensory value in foods that have been used in this process. It can change the flavour and can cause vitamin and protein destruction. However, non-thermal methods offer an extension in shelf life without changing the sensory values or nutritional values. It is a low cost method of food processing also. Non thermal methods have a big place in the future of food processing as consumers are becoming more aware of the nutritional value of the food, as well as wanting to save money and enjoy the flavour of the
In this article Host discusses two drawbacks of processed food: the loss of nutrients and the adding of harmful chemicals. In order for processed food to have longer shelf life, it has to go through many cycles of heating and cooling. This causes the food to lose many important nutrients, as well as flavor. This means that in order to get all of our necessary nutrients from processed food, we will have to eat mass quantities of it. This is very unhealthy and not suggested. Instead, we can get all of our necessary nutrients from fresh foods that are not processed, and we only have to eat a small quantity of
Pollan also states that there are many reasons to avoid complicated food products (processed foods) (11). One reason to avoid these kinds of foods are because they lie to your body with their artificial colors, artificial flavours, and synthetic sweeteners. Processed foods can be very unhealthy for our bodies they can increase our chances of having cancer. There are many reasons why we make these processed foods and one of those reasons is to expend the shelf time in the supermarkets, so businesses won 't lose any money by throwing away products. . Another reason why we make processed food is because it 's cheaper and faster to make unlike making or growing it the old fashioned way where it takes more money and time. I believe this is no excuse to be selling these types of foods. If it risk the health of the consumer then it shouldn 't be on the shelf of markets. Still there are many things Pollan is telling us to avoid in our foods. Like food products that have unpronounceable ingredients, unfamiliar ingredients, five ingredients or more, and if it contains high-fructose of corn syrup. Lastly Pollan states to

Living in one of the wealthiest nations worldwide, with privileges and services provided being second to none, has changed how Americans view one of life’s biggest necessities - food. Because of an abundance of food available for consumption, Americans take it for granted and waste food. The statistics for food wastage in America are shocking. As reported by Suzanne Goldenberg, an environment spokesperson, American consumers and retailers waste one-third of food produced in the country, which equals to 60 million tons and $160 billion annually. Americans waste food because of the appearance of the food and confusing expiration date, which lead to environmental damages; However, there are potential solutions to counter this issue.
Food—it is that precious substance our bodies need to survive. Whether it brings feelings of nostalgia and comfort, or unites families together, we can all agree that food is a vital source of nourishment. However, our definition of food has changed drastically with the advent of modern technology, which has given rise countless food trends. The desire for the cheap mass-production of food has induced an unspoken transition from slow cooked chicken and steamed veggies to frozen tv-dinners disguised to look like actual food worthy of consumption. Hence, food trends and technology effects the way we produce, purchase, and consume food in the United States.
However, freezing produce immediately after picking near the end of the growing season establishes a way to continue to have produce year round. Contrary to want some believe, freezing food actual preserves fresh food. According to “Freezing foods” (2016), “Freezing delays the growth of microorganisms and slows down enzyme activity, keeping foods from spoiling” (para. 1). In addition, “Freezing foods” insists that freezing is simple and forestalls flavor, color, and texture changes (para. 1). Fresh produce does not stay ripe for long and freezing produce directly after picking solves this problem especially allowing cold states to survive through the winter
Technology has an irrefutable effect on the food industry. In old times, food products are produced through the use of intensive labor. There are no machineries, tools and equipment to aid in the production of these products in order to attain maximum efficiency and productivity. Through the application of technology food production began to be modernized. Nowadays, we have modern technology for processing our food products and in the process prolonging its shelf life.
Food preservation is the process of treating and handling the food that will keep the food in a good conditions for a long period of time or for future use. Usually food preservation involve the inhibition of bacterial growth, fungi or other microorganisms in the food. Food preservation will inhibit or slow down the food spoilage, loss of the food quality, edibility or nutritional value. Unprotected foodstuffs will cause the bacteria and fungi colonize in the food rapidly which increase the bacteria population and produce toxic and distasteful chemicals (Janzen,1977).

Food waste is defined by food that is lost, wasted, or discarded and is caused through a few different processes. Food is wasted through many different ways at farms, grocery stores, and in homes. Over 40% of the food in the United States, specifically, goes to waste and 97% percent of this waste goes straight to landfills. The main issue with food waste is that the majority of food is being wasted unnecessarily. In stores, food is often thrown out because it does not meet specific standards that dictate what may be desirable to consumers. This issue of food picking is important as foods are not always being thrown away because they have gone bad, but because they have appearances that do not seem attractive. If we hope to lessen the environmental impact we have as a result of the mass
The basis of the discipline focused on understanding of the chemistry of food components such as proteins, carbohydrates, fats and water and reaction during processing than storage.
