First I would introduce them to what a nutritional facts food label is and what it looks like. I would then explain why it is placed on every food item. The majority of packaged foods come with a food label. This food label is based on a 2000 calorie (kcal) adult diet. If used properly it helps a person manage weight. The first thing usually seen on the label is the serving size for example a pack of cookies with a count of 12 the serving size is 4. You would also notice serving per container this is the number of servings you shall get from a container. So the example had a 12 count of cookies, a serving size of four which means that the serving per container is 3. Four components of the food label are:
Nutrition facts- the nutrition facts inform us about the daily values of nutrients used in a product based on a 2000 calorie diet. it also indicates how much we should consume from the container.
• Ingredient information- informs us of the different ingredients used in producing the item. This is beneficial especially for persons who have allergies, or for persons who does not consume gluten.
• Net contents – tells us the weight or amount in the package.

In selecting a healthy diet the six basic principles needs to be considered. Planning a diet doesn’t mean that you cut of certain foods to lose weight; it simply means having a healthy balanced diet that comprise of foods from the six food groups (water, carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins and minerals) .
Firstly we need to consider adequacy in our diet. Adequate diets administer the essential nutrients, fibres and energy to the human body for improved growth, repair and maintenance of muscle, cells and organs.
Secondly Balance plays an important role in planning a diet. This is where the nutrients from the six food groups (water, carbohydrates, fats, protein, vitamins and minerals) are portioned out according to the nutrient intake a person requires. It is important that they do not consume more than required and consume the proper amount.
