Recently, inhabitants of many societies and communities are demonstrating a unwillingness to care about their neighbors, and with this comes changes in those societies. Careers, school, work, activities, and spending time with friends are only some of the reasons why people are becoming inconspicuous and are unable to show compassion towards the problems and feelings of other people. Having compassion and sharing the feelings and problems of another is called empathy. Displaying empathy towards another person’s stress and worries is an extremely important concept that more people should know about because it will help both themselves and the other individual. It not only helps that person with their problems, but it also helps society recognize that problem and try to resolve it. Empathy is also the key to building a society because empathy is important people making connections with each other, and helps people work out their differences with others by realizing both their own emotions and the other person's emotions. A prime example of showing empathy is when the Supreme Court ruled in favor of Samantha Elauf, who accused the clothing store Abercrombie and Fitch of discriminating against her because she wore a headscarf to her job interview. The Civil Rights Act of 1964 clearly states that employers cannot refuse to hire a person for their religion. Samantha Elauf was given $20,000 in compensation, but the company was not said to be liable because she did not ask for religious accommodation. When children are surrounded by compassion for each other and their troubles, they learn to also present the same feelings for others. It is important especially in schools because this is where children go to learn, and if they see that people are demonstrating empathy towards each other than they might try to replicate those same emotions in themselves. An example of this is in the U.K. where schools had implemented a more lenient dress code to help address the feeling that students had. Some students did not feel comfortable in the mandatory school uniform. The new dress code at this school allows girls to wear pants, and the boy students to wear skirts if they wanted to. This is a display of empathy because the school understood the feelings of their students, that they did not feel like themselves in the school uniforms, and made adjustments to make them feel more comfortable in their clothes. Lastly, empathy is shaping society because empathy allows people to imagine what life would be like from another person’s perspective. This would make them less likely to do anything relating to their concerns or worries, or make them want to help that individual more.
