The Value of a College Education
The value of a college education is in doubt as one hears stories of college graduates who end up working at McDonalds, or Starbucks. Many students are rethinking the true value of going to school for another four years versus jumping into the workforce straight out of high school. However, though the amount of student debt has increased along with inflation and more students than ever are taking out student loans, the true value of a college graduation may be more than money can measure.
For example, according to a study published by the Public Policy Institute of California, Student Debt and the Value of a College Degree, there is no question of the value of a college

Is it any wonder that many college freshmen find themselves unequal to the task and drop out? A college education teaches critical thinking, language skills, quantitative reasoning and communication as part of its core curriculum. These are things that were sadly lacking in my public school education. Gatto quotes in his article Against School …“Woodrow Wilson, then president of Princeton University, said the following to the New York City School Teachers Association in 1909: "We want one class of persons to have a liberal education, and we want another class of persons, a very much larger class, of necessity, in every society, to forgo the privileges of a liberal education and fit themselves to perform specific difficult manual tasks." (Gatto)So how do we convince the larger masses that they do not want a college …show more content…
They learn how to regurgitate answers the state wants them to give, and any attempt to be an individual is now grounds for being suspected to be a member of the trench coat mafia. So the kids learn to submerge any personal expression. They learn that it 's better to go along so that you get along. They learn that to rock the boat could get them rocked right out of the school. Don 't question authority. Do as you 're told. Don 't think, just do as I say. Oh, and have a good and productive life as an active, well-adjusted participant in our thriving democracy!”
“Why College is Still Worth It Even Though It Cost Too Much.” Money.com (2015): N.PAG. MasterFILE Complete. Web. 11 Oct. 2016 The author of this paper address that a lot of college students feel like the time, money, and effort is not worth it; However, studies show that it does pay off by receiving higher pay, better work hours, and better benefits, such as insurance plans. A poll was done using college alumni to see if they thought that college paid off, and of the 30,000 that were in the poll a majority of them agreed that it did. Also, the writer includes several other polls conducted to show the life-long impacts of a college education, which includes better career and friendship
In recent years, many have debated whether or not a college education is a necessary requirement to succeed in the field of a persons’ choice and become an outstanding person in society. On one hand, some say college is very important because one must contribute to society. The essay Three Reasons College Still Matters by Andrew Delbanco shows three main reasons that students should receive their bachelor’s degree. On the other hand, many question the point of wasting millions of dollars on four years or maybe more to fight for highly competitive jobs that one might not get. Louis Menand wrote an article based on education titled Re-Imagining Liberal Education. This article challenges the main thought many americans have after receiving a secondary education. Louis Menand better illustrates the reasons why a student should rethink receiving a post secondary education better than Andrew Delbanco’s three reasons to continue a person’s education.
A four and two year college is the best option for students, but it is not for everyone because it would not be a smart financial choice. College may not be the right choice if the student does not receive a good return of investment. According to Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill, “…not all college degree or college graduates are equal” (209). Stephanie Owen and Isabel Sawhill’s point is that the amount of money someone makes depends on their job. For example, someone with an educational background might make less than someone without a degree. Depending on what field of study a student goes into will reflect how much they will make and if their return of investment is worth going to college. For those who receive a dreadful return of investment may not be able to pay their students’ loan which will lead them into debt. Financially, college will not be a smart choice to invest in for everyone. Most believe a four and two year college is the best option for students because on average students with a degree make more than someone without a degree, but not everyone will agree. Some people will say that not everyone needs a degree to make a lot of money because there have been rich successful people without a degree. Yes, it is true that there are
Is it necessary to have a college degree before having the opportunity to experience the dream career of your choice? Depending on what background you came from, there are different reasons why we go to college. Most of us go due to career change/job position, increase our intellect/knowledge, not to be stigmatized, playing as a role model either to our children or even someone that we care of. In his essay, “A College Education: What Is Its Purpose?” Andrew DelBanco mentioned the three reasons college still matters which are: Economic (A college degree has replaced the high school diploma as “the minimum requirement into the skilled labor market.”), Opportunity (Our democratic form of government requires an educated
Many Americans today tend to believe that a college education is valuable financially, yet some others strongly oppose this, since they look at the college education as being both time and money consuming. A person who successfully completes a college education may obtain one or all of the following; an associate’s degree after two years, a bachelor’s degree, master’s degree or a PhD. The institutions that provide the college education can be public or private. Whereas a college education might be seen as being very expensive, it actually increases people’s chances of getting higher paying jobs, instills knowledge into them, and raises their enjoyment levels.
Sometimes you will hear other people 's conversation and they are filled with talk of the declining value of getting a college education. The earnings from a four year degree are greater today than ever and almost
American society has started to take education for granted. Today it is so easy for most anyone to afford or to be accepted into a college that you wind up with people being here to socialize instead of learn and that leads to a decline in overall performance because it turns the atmosphere away from learning and into more of a four year party before the real world. Society seems to show college as a next step, almost if its a responsibility instead of a choice which hurts not only themselves but at the same time serving as a distraction for the people who are aspiring to do something better with their life. These dedicated individuals deserve better than to be forced into an environment where they are subjugated to a mass of people who would rather party than learn. The real students have enough to deal with as it is but forcing people to go to class would only exacerbate the situation forcing focus driven students to have important cla...

College. It is the seven-letter word that almost every child will hear thousands of times while they are growing up. They constantly are bombarded by the idea that they must go to college if they want to be successful. However, what if this is a false statement. What if college isn’t as great as everyone makes it out to seem. Well, these days some people believe that young people are better off, not going to college. Over the years the economy around the world has changed. It has prospered, and it has fallen. As the economy went downhill the government began cutting funds in areas that they felt were necessary to exterminate. One of the largest areas of funding that was cut was education. Colleges began receiving less money from the government, resulting in a rapid increase of college tuition fees. Due to this, a lot of people believe that college tuition is too expensive for what you get, and not worth the money. However, most people believe that college is necessary in order to further their education, and in order for them to earn their degree. They think that this degree has the ability to help college graduates get a job and work up to a career that only someone with a college level degree is able to achieve. The truth lies in the facts, and statistics. College is the seven-letter word that all people should be thinking about. A college education is a valuable investment that everyone should strive to achieve, and is completely worth the expensive cost.
In today’s society, the idea of receiving a college education has been pondered quite a bit as to whether or not it is actually worth it. According to Michelle Adam, many people “…today believe that getting a good education is key to success in our society, this revealed surprising issues that challenge the notion of higher education being worth its price tag” (59). Naturally, many high school graduates apply for college right before or after graduation. Others decide to go into the work force, armed forces, or simply remain unemployed. The question that many people debate about is, is a college education worth it in the long run?
