The attribution theory is important to me as a coach because it will guide me in how to react in the different stages of competition and will help to give my athletes the opportunity to reach peak physical performance and outcome. It will not only help them to reach their optimal peak performance, but will also help them to become good people of character when they are no longer playing the sport. I would like to want to be able introduce and model to my athletes that it is acceptable to make mistakes once in awhile, yet you just have to learn from and correct those mistakes and keep moving forward. This is important because as coaches we want to inspire our teams and teach them to view their successes and failures through their own attributions, and not only to base their success on outcome, but instead on their performance. The attribution theory teaches us to break this down into causality, stability, and control. Therefore, when speaking to our team before or after a game, before or after a practice, or between drills, the direction of our speech will be based on the team’s performance. For example, if the team performs well and wins a game, as coaches we should help the team break down why we won. Players should ask themselves, was it due to the teams effort and good performance, or was the competition easy? From there we can decide if this outcome is stable. Was this luck? Or does the team possess talent and ability that can carry them throughout the season? Finally, we should address control. Were we as a team, in control by putting forth our best effort and can we continue to do so in each game? As I have asserted, coaching is far more than winning or losing. A coach is an essential cog in shaping qualities such as sportsmanship, competitiveness, self discipline, and work ethic. Attribution theory explains people motives by giving an option of disposition or situation, of which we decipher the motive to a behavior. The fundamental attribution error is the tendency to link behaviors with personal characteristics, therefore if someone is murdered a suspect could be someone who really hates them because it gives them a motive. We can characterize a dispositional situation from a situational and come to a conclusion on why someone had a such behavior, and it helps to find a motive based on that. We can infer a motive from a behavior from things like external and internal attributions, so internal traits and responses to things.

This, I believe is a very important part of coaching, because as a coach you are looked not only as an authority figure but as a role model. When people attribute things, they attribute them to either situational or dispositional factors. A situational factor has something to do with external factors, where dispositional factors have something to do with personal (internal factors). For the sports team, the coach will lead its members’ growth in developing training, providing encouragement, and monitoring their progress. The player will become more skillful in the game.
