WHAT IS AN ADVERTISEMENT? Advertisements are part of our lives whether we like it or not. Sometimes, we do not notice them but the truth is we are bombarded with different types of advertisements in different spaces and time: in the TV, when we are in our social networks, when we are reading magazines or even in the bus stops. But, what is an advertisement? According to English Oxford Dictionaries, “an advertisement is a notice or announcement in a public medium promoting a product, service, or event or publicizing a job vacancy” (n.p.). The promotion of different services or products though ads, creates groups of consumers; that is people who is going to use that service or is going to purchase that product. The fulfilment of that aim, the construction of consumerist society, can be achieve by “understanding of who those consumers are: where they live, what they will spend, what are their needs (…)” (Delin, 2000). According to Delin (2000), groups of consumers can be characterized in many different ways: by studying the population in terms of sex, age, region, social groups… but also by looking into their personalities. The advertisement that I have selected was part of a campaign in 2009 called Live Unbuttoned from the American brand Levi Strauss & CO. Levi Strauss & CO is an American clothing company known worldwide as Levi’s brand of denim jeans. Its commercials are very remarkable due to the usage of certain songs that makes them memorable and which increase their sales. I have chosen this advertisement, first because Levi’s is one of my favourite brands and second, because I considered it an interesting advert to
