would like to highlight the work of Amnesty International and the significant contribution it makes in rescuing many disadvantaged people from extremely challenging circumstances in many parts of the world. The word amnesty is defined as “the act of an authority (as a government) by which pardon is granted to a large group of individuals” (n.d.). Amnesty describes “an act of clemency by an authority (as a government) by which pardon is granted especially to a group of individuals” (n.d.). The name of the organization is implicit of its role and the scale on which it carries out its responsibilities. The Charter of the United Nations that was laid out by the United Nations contained an “affirmation of faith in fundamental human rights, in the dignity and worth of the human person, in the equal rights of men and women and of nations large and small”. This is consistent with the mission of Amnesty International. As an organization they: “work to protect men, women and children wherever justice, freedom, truth and dignity are denied. As a global movement of over seven million people, Amnesty International is the world 's largest grassroots human rights organisation. They investigate and expose abuses, educate and mobilise the public, and help transform societies to create a safer, more just world” (n.d.) They protect people, defending their right to freedom truth and dignity by investigating and exposing abuses and galvanize a global movement and educate future generations so that eventually human rights for every single individual will be realized. The Human Rights Advisory Panel was introduced in March 2006 in an effort to provide remedies for acts and omissions, including human rights violations by UNMIK. The HRAP also found that UNMIK had violated the right to peaceful assembly, under Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR). In full defence of the victims, Amnesty International concurs with the Human Rights Advisory Panel’s recommendations that UNMIK must publicly apologize for the failure to protect the lives of Mon Balaj and Arbën Xheladini, as well as for the injuries to Zenel Zeneli and Mustafë Nerjovaj. They must also provide the complainants with adequate compensation for the moral damage suffered. Amnesty International calls on the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Kosovo, to fully discharge UNMIK’s obligation to provide reparation to the victims, and their families, who have been waiting for recognition of their pain and loss for eight long years.
