Child labour has been a controversial issue for quite a period of time in the current society. Many view child labour as a job which can cause severe harm to the child therefore it should be abolished; however in others point of view abolishing child labour would cause more harm than benefit to the modern society. Despite of the different debates between the different points of view, I strongly agree that child labour should be abolished worldwide. In reality, child labour is needed to sustain low costs, however are low costs more important than a child, are they more important than the rights of a human being. Child labourers are not robots, they have feelings, they can be exhausted and depressed at times, however what leads to this problem? Lack of leisure. According to the oxford dictionary the word leisure is defined as: The Use of free time for enjoyment, however is there any free time given to the child labourers? A typical child labourer’s life would be work, work and work for the entire day, month and year without any resting, no matter what happens, no free time is given to them, which means no leisure. Without leisure any human being would be unhappy, excluding leisure in your life, practically means taking your happiness away from you, and without happiness your life would be full of depressed feelings. According to the Mayo foundation for medical research, continuous sadness and depression can lead to many serious issues including: loss of interest, self mutilation such as cutting and suicide, the most serious issue out of all of them. Thus, not giving any free time to any human being is against the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, article 24, which deliberately states that “Everyone has the right to rest and leisure, including reasonable limitation of working hours and periodic holidays with pay.” However the human rights don’t apply to child labourers, this states the unfairness and how hard and depressing the job
