Technology is a very helpful tool that should be implanted into all urban and high poverty schools. “Technology is treated as a tool to help accomplish complex tasks (rather than as a subject of study for its own sake) that engage students in extended and cooperative learning experiences that involve multiple disciplines” (Griffin and Holland, 2008). Technology is a good tool to use when accommodating different learning styles. Therefore technology can become a motivator for students to keep them interested in the lesson. Collaborative-team-learning settings aide student with retain formation by implementing technology. Many of the urban school targets high poverty areas, therefore there is a tremendous need for implementing technology into an urban setting. Many urban schools have outdated technology computers, and inadequate or nonexistent science equipment, materials and labs. Therefore students do not have the required software or material for a student to become successful. In some of the urban schools the textbooks are outdated therefore using an eBooks would be a good way to updated all learning material. When schools are able to provide intellectual support and resources, students can develop academically and discover their intellectual abilities. “Providing laptops for urban adolescents, for example, has increased achievement and engagement when computer use moves beyond rote skill practice” (Penuel, pg.21 2006)”. During Hiller research he indicated that a reform initiative should be providing laptops and wireless access in an urban high school. By doing this he believe this will improve urban student’s standardized test scores. Student can be easily influenced through a game to retaining different concepts. For instance sitting on the computer watching a video on how to write a paper would be more beneficial for this student. Kinesthetic learner are people who learn from manipulative. Therefore, this person would benefit more from using a virtual lab, where he or she can utilized different software to conduct an actual experiment. Visual learner learn better seeing representation of something. For example watching a video, they are able to see how something is been done in order to retain the information. By implementing technology all of these learning styles are to be targeted at one time. “By using kinesthetic learning techniques, thousands of students who are either kinesthetic or have ADHD or ADD have become top students using our methods and materials” (Linksman, 2000).
It is helpful to connect the learning to a student’s prior experience. Teachers also need to consider the role of technology in their classroom.
Within these common learning methods, there are three distinct types of learning styles (Brown, 1997): auditory, visual and kinesthetic. Each style of learning describes how the learner connects with information. Auditory learners commit information to memory and understanding by hearing it and then speaking it. Visual learners process and learn information through visual aids, such as charts and other objects to help them remember and understand new information. Visual learners tend to be better at memorizing and recalling facts. Kinesthetic learners need to use their hands to learn, and prefer to demonstrate methods and concepts rather than simply communicating the information verbally. As currently structured, the anatomy labs at Chatham University do not appeal to each type of learning style proportionately. Instead, the labs are tailored most strongly to visual and auditory learners while kinesthetic learners are neglected. This is not surprising, and college courses in general tend to ignore this third learning style. For example, the lecture portion of classes are well suited for auditory learners and visual learners because they can listen to the lecture and see Power Points but they don’t attract kinesthetic learners. But labs are supposed to reinforce what is being taught in the lecture portion by presenting the information in a hands-on, interactive manner, making their current structure rather ironic. To change this at Chatham, I plan to develop hands-on, interactive labs that will appeal to all three learning styles. According to Clarisse, during school they sit and watch ‘ educational’ programs all day, these programs are not like documentaries in this time period, “they just run the answers right by you” (Bradbury 27). The program has no student input in an era where television should have interactive features. In areas like Africa where there is less education opportunities and less books and materials due to them being expensive, it is reasonable to think that technology would be an answer to the education crisis, but electricity is expensive and hard to get in the African savanna. Even the universities in Africa are lacking books because “they are produced in Europe so the end user in Africa has to pay more”(Spinks). People can’t even afford the books needed to get the education they deserve, low-end schools probably use what they can and it ends up that they are just running answers by the student because they don’t have the materials to show the learner visually. Many new battery-efficient and solar powered tablets have been released as educational tools for people in Africa that can supply the learning to students without Wi-Fi. Technology properly used in the classroom has many advantages to a student’s learning. Computers have always been useful, but not until recently have computers become useful for children who are twelve and under. Of course these children enjoy playing games and talking to there friends on the computer but due to new innovations coming out everyday children can now do a lot more then just play and socialize. Computers have brought school to the home. When children come home from school it used to mean school was over but today if you have access to the internet school is know longer over but just beginning on the internet. The internet has special educational sites that children can visit and learn from. Besides that children actually can have contact with there personal teacher from school. A new invention called the “Mobile Author can be used by human instructors either from a computer or a mobile phone to create their own Intelligent Tutoring Systems and to distribute them to their students. Students can also use any computer or mobile phone to have access to theory and tests.” (Source 2, Journal) Homework, notes, review assignments can now be given over the internet by the child’s teacher from there school. “Instructors can monitor their students; progress and communicate with their students during the course.” (Source 2, Journal) Children can learn new information on the internet and they are able to review and get extra help on things they don’t understand. If a child realizes that they do not understand something when they get home, they know longer have to wait to go in to school for extra help, but they now can communicate with there teacher online or they can go to an internet tutoring system which will give them just as much help as being in a regular classroom.
