While more research is needed to establish the cause of CLABSIs, and best care practices of CLs, there are some quality assurance improvement changes that can be implemented now. Utilizing evidence-based research, a quality assurance change plan can be implemented to decrease the risk of nosocomial CLABSIs. Nursing staff must be properly educated on the new standard of care, adequate training must be given to the staff, proper devices must be on hand, and evaluation of the procedure is needed to ensure the best patient outcome. Nursing leadership will play a major role in advocating for these changes.
Therefore, CNOs will need to provide information to patients that are clear, beneficial, pertinent and readily available. In order to improve the quality of care that patients receive, the CNO needs to engage physician participation to be successful in public reporting initiatives. Although this may be a challenge, encompassing physicians in the hospital’s vision will gain their buy-in and harvest favorable results for the organization, while promoting quality performance. Additionally, CNOs need to involve staff within the organization to outline the culture and organizational needs. Innovative tactics such as empowering staff, enhance measureable worth to the organization to include patient satisfaction and safety.
However, one’s attitude towards incorporating and utilizing nursing standards in their practice is essential in determining its success or failure. Having an attitude of acceptance and valuing new ideas is something that I am beginning to acquire in my nursing practice. My positively changing attitude is applied to the leadership standard of nursing. Functioning effectively within a multi-faceted team requires open communication, shared decision making, and mutual respect. I am learning to have better leadership attitudes as it relates to appreciating the importance of collaboration between the multi-disciplinary medical team, respecting the unique qualities of each member, and acknowledging my own contributions to the effectiveness or dysfunction of the team.

Nursing theories are the support of nursing practice nowadays. Application of nursing theory into practice has significant impact on improving quality of patient care and overall healthcare outcomes. In particular, a practice theory called Plan-Do-Study-Act cycle (PDSA), developed by W. Edwards Deming, can be applied to improve processes in healthcare settings. According to Varkey, Relle, & Resar (2007), this theory “involves trial-and-learning approach in which a hypothesis or suggested solution for improvement is made and testing is carried out on a small scale before any changes are made to the whole system” (p. 736). Healthcare processes need to be constantly evaluated based on evidenced-based-practice for quality improvement and better patient outcomes.
Nurse practitioners’, as primary care providers base their practice on innovations and evidence to provide cost-effective health care services, which in turn can bring improved patient outcomes (Vincent, Hastings-Tolsma, Gephart, & Alfonzo, 2015).
