Jamaica
Jamaica would be in better condition if they were still under the British Empire today. Throughout time Jamaica has undergone tragedy after tragedy. From the natives being forced off of the land, from being one of the biggest homes for slave trade, having the capital attacked and now being one of the worst drug and gang violence filled countries out there, Jamaica has not had an easy uprise. Although they had their fair share of hardships while under British rule as well, they were in overall better shape. When Jamaica was dependent on England they had more structure and civilization, two immensely valuable things when ruling a country. They celebrate this as a national holiday every year on the sixth of August. They became independent after World War II during a large movement of decolonisation involving multiple colonized countries throughout the world. Jamaica became a constitutional monarchy proceeding British rule, meaning a king or queen acts as the Head of State but is not in full authority (Buisseret). The newly independent island struggled to find a new ruler that had the capability and intentions to have the island flourishing. The country is still dealing with repercussions from past ruler’s reckless decisions. When Britain left the country they took their resources with them leaving Jamaica with little to nothing. Jamaica experienced a widespread of overwhelming corruption since they have became independent that still is present to this day. Leaving a country with no form of laws or law enforcement is setting up the country for what has become of Jamaica today. "In recent years, violence by drug gangs has made the island one of the most dangerous places in the world" (Bring Back the British!). Just at glance many people assume Jamaica to be a perfect, unproblematic vacation getaway island but that is certainly not the case. Not only is Jamaica struggling with drug gang violence, which reflects why the have one of the highest murder rates in the world; they also deal with immense discrimination and poor education (Chung). Children are taught discrimination at an early age, still to this day students in Jamaica’s school system take a test which reflects if they will fail or succeed in life and by your result you are sent to certain schools (Chung). Jamaica has not made near the advancements since World War II as many other countries involved in the same decolonization, you can see this in their daily life and what is happening so much that it is being considered normal. “* In 2012, our GDP per capita is the same
