Thesis: Understanding the ideology of a nation’s way of life is fundamental to successful military operations. Ireland has endured fighting, famine, and struggle for centuries, making the people of Ireland both tough and rugged. Era after era of invasions of Ireland created a culture that is resilient, comprehends survival, and fully understands guerrilla warfare.

a) Geographic location, background/origin, and religion

b) Infrastructure and terrain

c) Social normality –Hard people from a harsh environment

d) Economic factors –Trade: early/modern trade and current state

e) Political repute –Similarity to U.S. Government

f) Military characteristics and major conflicts

ii. Size and strength of current military forces

3. Common cultural characteristics of Ireland.

a) Ireland in recent years

4. U.S. Military Operations

a) U.S. Ireland Relations How current regional affairs are influencing those common culture characteristics.

b) Insurgency in Ireland Circa late 1900s. How the cultural characteristics should be considered in the planning and execution of company/battalion-level operations.

c) Emigration and J-1 visa program. How the selected culture is similar and/or dissimilar to the US Army’s culture.

d) Civil considerations. How consideration of cultural characteristics can or should affect unit operations.
