This paper will cover several different topics to include terrorism and its effects on policing, the role that social stigma plays in the ethical forces behind police corruption in comparison to police abuse of force and finally police conscience and individual conscience as it relates to police assignments. All of these topics are an important part of the overall ethics as it relates to law enforcement and contemporary issues. Some of these topics are a source of controversy such as individual consciousness and police assignments. The reason being, is that some law enforcement officers may give into stereotypes of individuals and not treat them fairly or with the same equal justice or discretion that they may treat others in society. The case of Daniel Holtzclaw is a perfect example. A jury found former Oklahoma City police officer Daniel Holtzclaw guilty on Thursday Dec 10th 2015, of sexual battery, forcible oral sodomy and rape (Martinez & Mann, 2015). Holtzclaw had preyed on women who are usually viewed as a drag on society. He used this to his advantage by telling them that no one would believe them if they told about his activity. Other police officers, may treat those who may be stigmatized in society in a good ethical manner that includes alternatives to arrest. For example, In September 2013, Miami (Fla.) Officer Vicki Thomas caught a struggling single mother shoplifting food from a grocery store for her family. Thomas made the news for the way she solved the problem. Rather than arrest her, she purchased the food for the mother, and showed her the local food banks and churches where she could get back on her feet (Burger, n.d.). This is an example of a police officer utilizing good ethics in relationship to someone who falls into the category of being socially stigmatized in society. This is an example where social stigma was used to reduce possible police corruption. The ethical forces behind police corruption and police abuse of force can be identical. Although financial gain may be one of the most common reasons for police corruption it can also be behind police abuse of force. Police officers have targeted rival drug dealers or gang members for individuals who are paying for police protection and to get rid of competition. Corrupt cops have been involved in abusing powers and even committing murder for financial gain.
