“They are willing to sell themselves in order to find a better life for themselves or to have money to send back home, or to make sure their children are raised in a better county.” (Bell 1). For decades, beautiful Russian and Asian women have been seen in catalogs as mail-order brides. Although the mail order bride industry promises American men a beautiful, obedient, foreign wife, it fails to mention the negative atmosphere included within these situations. Mail order brides should be banned in the United States in order to reduce the increase of domestic violence amongst women (Chittenden 5), the testing of a bride’s selflessness (Bell 1), and internet scams (Internet Relationships 1). Immigration in the United States has increased over the years. Nevertheless, the process may take weeks, even months at a time. Mail order brides are no exception either. They undergo a similar process in order to immigrate as well. Being a vulnerable immigrant to the United States, mail order brides are very prone to domestic violence and abuse from their American husband. Immigrant brides are forced to adapt to a new home which also includes getting used to new customs and traditions. Throughout the process of learning, the brides tend to be obedient, in which lack of leads to violence and other types of abuse. A popular technique abusive husbands use is the threat to deport the poor bride back to her home where she will suffer in poverty. The process of immigration within circumstances of a mail order bride moving to the U.S. tends to be gradual and complicated. In order to immigrate to the United States, the bride has two options. Show More“Domestic violence, or intimate partner violence, is defined as a pattern of assaultive and coercive behaviors, including physical, sexual, and psychological attacks as well as economic coercion that adults or adolescents use against their intimate partners” (Peeks-Asa). When it comes to domestic violence many people don’t want to get involved, but if just one person took a stand maybe others would follow and potentially save a life, like the neighbors did in The Day It Happened by Rosario Morales. Domestic violence can happen to anyone at any time, there is no typical victim or perpetrator. The fact that there is no one specific group that domestic violence occurs in more than another, only makes it more difficult to get an accurate representation of just who is being affected by this crime. “Domestic violence and abuse does not discriminate” (Smith and Segal). Domestic violence can have specific victims such as a spouse or domestic partner, a child, or an elder. Domestic violence can affect men as well as women. Some types of domestic violence are physical, verbal or nonverbal, sexual, stalking or cyberstalking, economic or financial, and spiritual.
Living on the border of California towns, brides are not welcome in the white communities. “We settled on the edges of their towns, when they would let us” (22-3). It puts a pressure on their geographic location and adds difficulty to be recognized and transform into their culture. From the beginning of time, women have been treated inferior to their male counterparts and this is a key picture as the brides in search for acceptance. The phrase “… when they would let us…” proved that gender and race prejudices have power to move them around. The brides learned to revolve their lives to find acceptance by the general society by playing the correct gender role of submissiveness. “Most of us on the boat were accomplished, and were sure we would make good wives. We knew how to cook and sew. We knew how to serve tea and arrange flowers and sit quietly on our flat wide feet for hours… A girl must blend into a room; she must be present without appearing to exist” (6-7). The geographical factor is not the only thing that created a culture distance. Japanese identities were rejected from white culture. Without identity, their husband and their community will never accept them;
Immigration has been a huge issue throughout American history. Especially now the issue has become extremely controversial. Many people have different answers to the immigration. Some say that we should close your borders to all outsiders, some say just specific countries, others want walls to cover our borders. The best solution is to have more regulations and better border control. That goes for both Mexico and Middle Eastern Countries which is the source of most of the problems. There needs to be better border checkpoints. The U.S needs to keep a better number on who's coming in and out. For the Middle Eastern countries better background checks need to be made. The number are low for the actual amount of immigrants that come from the Middle

The United States has often been referred to as a global “melting pot” due to its assimilation of diverse cultures, nationalities, and ethnicities. In today’s society, this metaphor may be an understatement. Between 1990 and 2010, the number of foreign born United States residents nearly doubled from 20 million to 40 million, increasing the U.S. population from almost 250 million to 350 million people. With U.S. born children and grandchildren of immigrants, immigration contributed to half of this population growth. These immigrants, consisting of mostly Asian and Hispanic backgrounds, have drastically changed the composition of the U.S. population. In 2010, Asians and Hispanics made up 20 percent of the U.S. population, in contrast to a 6 percent share of Asians and Hispanics in 1970. It is predicted that by 2050, the share of immigrants in the United States will increase to one half of the entire population. With this rapid increase in diversity, many citizens have opposing views on its impact on the United States. In my opinion, an increase in immigration does contain both positive and negatives effects, but in general it provides an overriding positive influence on America’s society (“Population”).
Post-modem feminism: These undocumented immigrant took a high risk crossing to United State, however, some of them did not make it to America, some went back home their families while some died
The United State’s immigration policy has undergone great change since the turn of the 20th century. Many things have contributed to this change, such as political problems, poverty, lack of jobs, and in fact our changing policy. The countries affected by these problems may have changed but the problems themselves have not. No matter what the location or time period, people have been driven from their homeland as result of political disputes. There will always be poor, 3rd world countries that can not create a prosperous environment for their people. As a result of general poverty, few jobs are available, which forces citizens to look beyond the borders for work. Our changing immigration policy is motivation for some immigrants to come to America. If the U.S. is accepting a high number of one country’s immigrants, than many of their citizens will emigrate for America, some legally and others illegally. The United State’s has changed its immigration policy many times in the last 100 years but the reasons for resettlement have remained generally the same.
Immigration has changed the demographics of the US. It has contributed to a massive growth of the US population. The inflow of immigrants has added a good mix of various ethnic and racial groups to the US population. The immigrant groups have had a tremendous impact on the social, cultural, economic and political landscape of the US.
Over the course of the 1900s, immigration from Europe to the United States was a huge step to take to become free. The idea of immigration was very appealing to many because the lifestyles were so rough, and the income to support a family was very low ( ). Although the anticipation of arriving in Ellis Island was beyond imaginable, the immigrants often came across many hardships, making the journey to freedom difficult. Immigration to the United States in the 1900s was a challenge due to unrealistic expectations of a better life, the hardships faced during migration, and the uncertainty of the inspection process once arriving to Ellis Island.
The researcher Michael T Johnson in 1995 investigated data from the National Family Violence Survey. Johnson reported that “…young married Hispanic women were more likely to experience domestic violence” (). The racial and ethnic groups revealed differences in rates and the forms of abuse. Researchers reported than African American and Hispanic women with low household income and educational status experienced greatest rates of family and domestic violence. According to Women of Color Network (2006) “African American women reported 29.1% intimated partner violence (sexually, physically, and mentally); on the other hand, Hispanic females reported 21.2%” (p. 1-4). The domestic violence rates among African American and Hispanic women have beben related to the sociocultural beliefs of the acceptance of marital abuse; especially, if women have low educational levels and are financially
This people came to the USA to join other members of their family. Having a family member here can make coming easier. Often the father came first, found a job and sent for his family later. When immigrants cross the border they are already part of this country, but most of them have far less access to education and opportunities than American citizens. Americans have more job opportunities than immigrants it may be because they speak English.
Two great internal migrations lie at the center of postwar history in the United States: the movement of rural southern blacks to cities in the North, South, and West, and the movement of whites to the suburbs. Though the roots of these migrations long preceded the postwar period, both population shifts were greatly accelerated by World War II. This relocation of people and resources remapped the racial, economic, and political geography of American cities. Postwar metropolitan growth followed a pattern of
