Good evening everyone. It’s truly a privilege for me to speak here at the Poetry Club. The poem ‘If’ by Rudyard Kipling is what I have chosen to discuss. The poem is about following a perfect path that leads to what we truly desire and deserve. It conveys the need for ‘hope’, the importance of pursuing a realistic dream and persevering towards an ambition through the use of language devices and selection of themes. Ladies and Gentlemen, today I am going to prove to you that this poem has significant connection to; Kipling’s livelihood and era, and the idea of growing pains portrayed in the choice of themes and aesthetics features.
Joseph Rudyard Kipling, not a name that you would all know; however he is a great person that should be remembered. ‘If’ is in fact a description of the lessons that he learned during the transition from the depressions to fame and glory. Kipling, shown in this picture, was born in Bombay, India in 1865 and was sent away by his parents at an early age. His foster parents abused him and thus he failed his public school education.
