Identities and How they are Formed From this section of the course I have learned about different philosophies and ideas about how identities are formed. The philosophies that make the most sense to me are the ideas of John Locke, Jean- Jacues Rousseau, Charles Harton Cooley and George Herburt Mead. Also the ideas focused on in my exercise have as well helped me to form an idea where identities come from and what they mean socially. John Locke had the idea that people in a society truly want to live together in harmony and that people are not aggressive by nature. That people are born with a "blank slate" and that anything can be learned. I completely agree with this statement. How people are brought up and what they are exposed to defines their identity and intentions in society. I was brought up by loving parents that among others things taught me to be true to my feelings and to express them truthfully. Jean-Jacues Rousseau's theory about corruption relates to the "clean slate" idea. He stated that corruption come from society. So if one is not influenced positively they may end up corrupt and be a hindrance on society. If a child grows up in a "dysfunctional family" they may be at a disadvantage to a child like my brother who is getting the same social education from my parents and the society we live in. Deep down inside, I have always known my parents are loving parents that will do anything they can to support me to prosper and succeed in life. The only problem is that my parents came from very traditional household that used the authoritarian parenting style, so that is the style they used on me. While growing up with parents using the authoritarian parenting style, I was not exposed to their warmth or nurturing side. Instead, I was taught to respect authority and traditional structure in a demanding, controlling and punitive way. This affected me in a negative way as I was expected to follow strict rules unconditionally with absolute obedience, and my parents rarely gave me choices or options as they had very high expectations of what I should be doing. For example, when I was in junior high, my parents selected all of my courses and I had no control over my school schedule. They told me that they were doing this because they knew what was good for me and what career path I should be going into in the future. However, what they did not understand at that time is that their actions lowered my self-esteem and prevented me to act independently; as a result, I never really learned how to set my own limits and personal standards until I entered my sophomore year in high school.

Before Lafley took over for Jager, P&G was stretched to the max, haplessly wasting away resources and opportunities with an overcomplicated business strategy. P&G was raising prices on their best selling brands to cover for missed sales and high production costs for new brands that failed to be a successful [Lafley, 2003]. They had hired too many employees and were involved in several investments that were unprofitable. P&G had not had a hit product since the launch of ALWAYS feminine products in the 1980’s and each additional product flop only stretched their recourses thinner and thinner. Costs were high and moral low with employees not afraid to voice their lacking confidence with P&G’s leadership and direction. Subsidiaries were blaming corporate for their missed earnings and visa versa [Lafley, 2003]. Strategies between the brands at P&G clashed and each were out to safe guard their own interests. The prices of their consumer products were too high while the company failed to deliver customer satisfaction. These factors distracted them from what had originally made them successful – being an industry leader in innovation (Markels, 2006).

In today’s society, a dysfunctional family is a concept that is taken lightly, because our society has been desensitized to it, and we have become so numbed by the idea. There are children who suffer greatly because of the families (or parents) who raised them. A dysfunctional family is defined as a family that encounters “problems that tend to be chronic and children [who] do not consistently get their needs met” (Benton). This includes negative, abusive, addicted, and neglectful parents. Individuals who are raised in a dysfunctional family can be impacted psychologically in many ways, such as participating in crimes, alcohol abuse, and drug abuse.

If you see someone with a tea, you typically assume this person is accompanied, whereas if someone is drinking coffee, you could assume this person is by them self. What we seem to believe about people in coffee shops are conscientious assumptions that we have of what it generally means to be “private in public”. We tend to assume this because, although it it different that stereotyping, it’s generalizing, which a basic form of nonverbal communication. Of course these assumptions are dumbfounding and are contradicted by many. Such as when the last school bell rings, and all the peppy teenage girls wanting their Starbucks fix, the atmosphere is shifted in a whole different direction.
