For the majority of college students, Sunday’s consist of sleeping in, getting ready for the week, and homework. However, for Ian Kunsey, a Sunday consists of football, sports, and more football. “He literally didn’t leave the apartment on Sunday because of football” roommate and friend Reed Stiller stated. Ian loves sports, “even more than people think he does” Stiller added. But the 18-year-old Connecticut native is more than the professional sports encyclopedia he may appear to be. Ian is a Sophomore at Elon University majoring in Cinema and Television Arts with a minor in Sport and Event Management. “It was the perfect combination of my love of sports and my love of film” Kunsey said when discussing how he declared his major. Elon’s football team, known as the Phoenix compete in the Colonial Athletic Association. Ian found the job as part of the university’s PACE program. PACE is a program that helps students find employment on campus to help pay their tuition. After seeing the job posting he instantly knew it was something he wanted to do. “It was the perfect combination of video and sports” Kunsey said. As an, “Assistant Video Producer” Kunsey can be found on the sidelines on game days filming everything including the action on the field and the fans cheering on their team. After the game, he logs the footage and produces content for the team’s social media accounts. On some occasions, Kunsey travels with the team for away games. “It’s amazing that as a Freshmen in college I was able to work for a Division I football team, it’s unreal.” Athletics Video Coordinator Nicholas Andrusisian spoke very highly of Kunsey, describing him as someone, “Who works well under pressure.” “Ian takes initiative, meets deadlines, has low to no entitlement issues.” Andrusisian
“Maintaining good academic standing is part of the student athlete culture,” according to women’s head soccer coach Jack Hyde, “It’s part of their responsibility...they embrace it,” he said (Stricklen). “I love football and I wouldn’t want to mess it up by not getting good grades in all my classes,” said Narayan, a student athlete (Given and Tribou). However, more and more student athletes are not finding studying and keeping their grades up a priority. Most student athletes dream of one day becoming a professional athlete, but without good grades, they won’t be able to go to a good college to play for. Imagine being stuck in a chair for five hours while someone transformed your face into some monster. John Matuszak had to tackle that challenge everyday of his acting job in The Goonies. John’s legacy still lives on for a few decades after his death in the role of Sloth. For him, it was nothing compared to his NFL career. John was an amazing defensive end, mostly for the Oakland Raiders. The phrase Renaissance man truly defines John Matuszak.
The overall culture and importance that American society places on college sports is susceptible to debate and criticism. Are we spending too much time and money on college football? Well that’s for you to decide, “Get football out of our universities” by Steven Salzberg expresses his concern that we are emphasizing too much on football and not enough on education. He makes his argument that America would be much smarter if only we would eliminate college football all together; he feels college football is driving academia to its death. Steven is effective in persuading his readers by utilizing rhetorical strategies and he provides his readers with facts and solutions. While reading Stevens article, you will see rhetoric used throughout his essay; he intends to open the reader’s eyes to the epidemic that football is having on our colleges and universities and provides viable solutions.
In The United States the number of people in prison is over two million, and of those two million it is estimated that two thirds of them will be back in prison within three years (Correctional Populations). Some people argue that rehabilitation is the most effective way to handle prisoners, but the risks don’t outweigh the benefits, especially for murderers. Nobles was an example of a murderer who appeared rehabilitated, but under close examination of his actions, he was no more than a manipulating sociopath. Nobles was not rehabilitated because his actions in court showed how he felt, his faith was a facade, and he was a schizophrenic.
The Rev. Mark B. McFadden was born and reared in Lebanon, VA. He is the fourth child of the late Wayne and Elnor Mae Hoops McFadden. He is a graduate of Lebanon High School. Throughout the country young men and women are losing their priority for an education. To attend a university should be a highly cherished privilege, and it should be an even greater honor to play athletics for the university. Therefore, the writer supports the decision that the “student” comes before “athlete” in student-athlete. Playing for pay should be considered a job for “professionals”. In the rulebook, the NCAA views college athletes as armatures. This statement sums it up best. When athletes go to college, not all of them go in with the mindset that athletics is going to be their future job....
Rick Reilly, in his ESPN column (2007), contends that sports competitions are more than simple games, instead, they are events capable of bringing people together in unique ways. He reinforces his contention by integrating inspirational anecdotal evidence, bold syntax, and unvarnished diction. Reilly’s purpose is to point out the importance and humanity of sports in order to convince a college professor and readers of sports magazines that sports writing is indeed an advanced and valuable profession. He assumes a humorous tone (“...most important- sports is the place where beer tastes best”) for an audience of sports magazine readers, but more specifically, a professor that told him that he was “better than sports.”

High school athletics leave a major impact on everybody that is involved with them. It also can even leave a mark on people who aren’t associated with them. There are many conflicting opinions on whether high school sports are a positive or negative influence on a student’s life. Athletics in high school can have an effect on the community as a whole. In H.G. Bisssinger’s highly regarded Friday Night Lights, high school football is accurately portrayed as the most important thing in Texas; it receives much more attention than academics. Football players are often treated like celebrities; yielding confidence, and at the same time creating pressure.
Line of duty death are terrible but they can be prevented by following the right procedure. Kyle Dinkheller was sheriff who made a couple mistakes which cost him his life. First he let the suspect get out of his car before the deputy ask him to. Second, he let the suspect feel like he was in charged in the traffic stop. Third, he let the suspect return to his vehicle after he was being uncooperative. Lastly, Dinkheller should more training with his weapon.
