Observation Reflection I received a new perspective on how teaching in the classroom works through my hands-on experience in the field. I was able to see education in a new light though observing many teachers from a view different than that of the student. I had a variety of children with varied backgrounds and contrasting teaching methods to reflect on. Many variables from the physical layout of the room to the classroom management style of the teacher can be drawn upon for future reference. An education major needs these observations to help develop their individuality as a teacher. If students know to behave and want to on their own, they will. When reflecting on the fifth grade strings class, I noticed a multitude of interruptions in the classroom. Students would use their bows as shotguns and place their hands on the horse hairs which can damage a bow. The teacher would often make a comment, but when it started again he would ignore it because he was busy. A common management style I witnessed that may have helped the strings teacher was making a repeated rhythm sound with mouth or hands for the students to repeat. The middle school and first grade chorus teachers used this method to engage the students in a short activity that grabbed their attention away from talking. In the higher grade levels I noticed a different style of management. The teachers would work efficiently to accomplish their learning objectives and musical goals. The high school women’s choir director would throw in a quick, “don’t talk out of turn,” then move on with the lesson. I believe this is because behaving should be expected of students at this
