Millennials range from 1980 to 1994 while Generation Z was born 1995 or after. Millennials are known as feeling entitled and lacking initiative while Generation Z is known for being global, social, and technological. Considering my personal experiences, I relate more to the Generation Z than the Millennials.
Parents and kids seem to be polar opposites. In my house, I have different views on certain topics than my parents. My parents were born in the 1970s and are part of the generation known as “Generation X”. I am from the generation known as “Generation Z” which includes people who were born in the late 1990s through 2010. There are days when my parents lecture me on a topic like Instagram, resulting in a fight. Differences in technology, culture, and education bring the large generation gaps within my family.
Generation Me, an inspirational book written by Jean M. Twenge, Ph.D. talked about today’s young Americans problems. Twenge did lots of research about young American lifestyles to determine their differences compared to “Boomers” – people born before 1970s. Twenge compared the results of personality tests given to “Boomers” when they are under 30, and today’s young American. This book is also based on films, magazines, newspapers, anecdotal stories from her and, others. Twenge argued that people born in the 1970s, 1980s, 1990s called “Generation Me” or “GenMe” is a generation highly optimistic but, faces crushing realities. Young people put themselves above all which can lead individualism, self-focus, and self-esteem. Therefore, today’s young American experience several problems as an outcome of focus on the self.
Now those Generation X¡¦s have there own fond little quirks too! They were brought up on television, Atari 2600s and personal computers. They are the generation that was raised in the 1970s and 1980s, and saw this country undergo a selfish...
Generation Y
"Your generation is nothing but a bunch of computer addicted slackers. You kids don't care about anything." These phrases and others can be overheard coming from the mouths of baby boomers, those born between 1946 and 1964, and other Generation Y predecessors. What happened? For years now, Generation Y, those born between 1977 and now, have been viewed negatively (Alch 1).
Members of the Y Generation include those born between the years 1982 and 1994. A generation is known as a group of people born in a particular period who would have experienced similar events or experiences while growing up. There are often negative connotations made against members of the Y Generation, as they are known for being spoilt, overly confident and too dependent on social media and technology. They are the first generation to have grown up with high-definition television, mobile phones, internet and social media. Generation Y are possibly more interested in the environment, caring and community orientated than previous generations. The majority of this generation is now in young adulthood and starting their careers. They make up most of the young singles and couples market and are a very critical group of consumers. Many of the claims made about Generation Y are based on little evidence and contradictory, this report seeks to examine these claims.
(Mazullo 2000, 718.) The theme of generational politics is a critical element in understanding the cultural politics of grunge. (733) Those in the generation of grunge were typically referred to being in Generation X. In 1991, Douglas Coupland conceived the term having shared it in his popular book Generation X: Tales for an Accelerated Culture. He described the generation, born after the baby boomers roughly from the early 1960s to late 1970s, as lacking in ambition, being indecisive with short attention spans, and preoccupied with blaming their parents for America’s political and economic issues. (730) Generation X is not without valid reason to have so much pent up angst, however, as they grew up in Raegan’s America. They were the first generation in which their parents practiced birth control, abortion, and some 40 percent of children were products of divorce. (Losyk 1997,
My generation has a lot of things that other generations did not have.We have our freedom,we have technology, and we have medicine. We have these things because past generations were willing to fight for them. They wanted the best for their country, themselves, and future generations.
To describe our generation in one word I would have to choose the word Developed because compared to older generations that didn’t have it as good as we do now, our generation is a lot more developed. Developed means to grow or change into something bigger, stronger, or more advanced ("Develop"). Developed is a good word to describe our generation for many reasons.
No other generation reflects the complex world we live in today. The baby boomers have left their indelible mark on America’s social landscape. The baby boomers created pop culture and a new form of political activism (Breaux J. November 1999). Education, medical advances, and technology afforded more freedom and independence. Soon America will look different; the average age of the population will go up to fifty-five. The baby boomers will have the benefits and face the challenges of longevity. Can America afford the social, medical, and political issues the aging baby boomers demand? Will our transportation system ensure more old drivers have safe alternatives? How will ou...
