As a writer, I would consider myself to be an average writer in need of improvement. My experience with writing has not always been the best because I was exposed to only certain types of papers like self-narratives, book reports, reflective essays and simple one to two-page research on a person’s bibliography assigned to me. Writing has never been my strength because I had to learn the English language at 8 years of age. I had to learn a new language without the help of my parents because they also did not speak English. I was able to overcome this obstacle but till this day, I still have some grammatical struggles. It is hard for me to write and to be able to distinguish my grammatical errors. I did the same steps outside of the classroom and would make them be due a certain date that I had set for myself. I felt that my method of writing did work for me because earned an “A” on the assignment. It helped me keep track of what I was doing and keep pace on when the due date and not having to do the work the night before. The technique of doing the graphs separately and later bringing them together to create the final version of the paper. This method was really helpful in having a successful grade. This assignment gave me the opportunity to liberate my feelings about the conflict with my aunt how was accusing me of robbery. I was able to reflect upon this conflict and tell my side of the story. It made me feel free and free of judgment. Writing about my family conflict helped me with the forgiveness to those people that had caused me harm. I am sitting in my bed, thinking about my process of writing as I am trying to go through it. It seems the more I think about it, the less I understand it. When I am writing, I don’t think. Which I know, sounds bad. But, I spend every single moment of every single day over thinking, over analyzing, and over assuming every aspect of my life. When I’m writing, I’m free from that for just a little bit. Until of course, my hands stop typing or the pencil (no pens- never pens) stops moving, then I’m right back on the carousel that is my brain. My relationship with writing has been much like roller coaster.Some experiences I had no control over. Other experiences were more influential. Ultimately it wasn’t until I started reading not because I had to read but because I wanted to, that's when my relationship reached change. I would have probably never cared about writing as I do today if it weren't for the critics in my family. When I was a child, my aunts and uncles always been in competition with who's child is better in school. I have always hated reading and writing because of the pressure to prove my family wrong was overwhelming for me. I had to prove them wrong and show them that I was capable of being "smart" which according to them was getting straight A's in all your classes.

English is a hard language to learn, for there are numerous elements of effective usage and writing. Many people, including me, struggle in writing because of a lack of knowledge. Since middle school, English was not a strong suit of mine. I struggled with the simplest of tasks often taking a considerably longer time to complete a task than the other students. Unmotivated teachers and a lack of interest resulted in remedial writing skills. To put it simply, I had little confidence in my writing and I dreaded taking the class because of the writing involved. In spite of my fears, I took the course and I was able to perfect and challenge my mediocre writing skills.
How does an artist create a painting? He or she cannot simply look at a canvas and a picture appear. The artist must be equipped with proper tools to create a masterpiece: paint and brushes. The same can be said about writers. Writers are not born with the knowledge of writing an attractive paper. They must be given tools of writing and shown how to utilize them. Artists and writers without proper tools will be nothing more than blank canvases and empty pages. I used to be a blank canvas, but a teacher gave me the tools I needed, and now I am a polished portrait.
The writing process is a subject that makes many people nervous. As well as some feel they write, there is always room for improvement. When I initially began this course I was definitely intimidated by the amount of essays we were scheduled to write. This year in English I have exponentially improved my writing skills. Through critical self-analysis I have found my Achilles heel for writing, grammar and mechanical errors. I improved on many aspects of my writing throughout the duration of this class, but there are still some things I need to refine. The words reading and writing used to make me cringe. The thought of putting my own ideas down on paper gave me complete anxiety. And worse, the thought of reading 300 plus words made me sick. When assigned papers and reading my stress level would rocket, to the point where I didn’t even want to try. It wasn’t until I realized who my sister was as a writer and reader that, I too, could become half of where she was at. Not only did my sister help me realize who I am as a reader and writer, she made me realize that I could actually enjoy the things I hated most. With the help of my sister and my 12th grade English teacher, I was able to pinpoint what my level as a reader and writer was and helped me learn to question and look into something with a deeper understanding, making these two things seem much easier.

Before taking English 1A, I was a discouraged writer because as an English learner, I did not believe that I had any ability to be an acceptable writer. Therefore, I did not have any joy while I was doing writing assignments. However, I have gradually loved writing through this semester. I fortunately got plenty of helps from my classmates and professor; thus, my writing skills have gotten improved a lot. I currently can feel that writing is a quite enjoyable process, and I like delivering my ideas to other people by writing, too. I am really proud that I have enhanced my pre-writing skills, writing structure and revising skills and have learned how to write an effective thesis statement and how to deal with rhetorical analysis. However, I still have lots of deficiencies in my articles, such as grammar problem and the lack of logical transition.
