There are many examples of hypocrisy in the play The Crucible throughout Act 1. Abigail is one of the most prominent examples of a character being a hypocrite. On lines 593-596 of Act 1 of the play, Abigail states, “She [Elizabeth] is blackening my name in the village! She is telling lies about me! She is a cold, sniveling woman, and you bend to her!”. Abigail is proving to be a hypocrite because of her statements like the previous. She continues to accuse individuals of things she does herself, making her a hypocrite. Abigail “blackens” Elizabeth's name in the village by gossiping about her and telling others lies about her. Another example of a character portraying acts of hypocrisy is in the case of Parris.
