As we knocked our arrow in the bow we strolled into the woods as quiet as a mouse. Kevin showed me where the stand was and i went into game mode. I climbed in the stand and i started to look around. Less than 30 minutes a 4 pointer came at 23 yards but since it was small i let him walk. I had about 10 minutes of light left and it has been 2 hours since i seen him. Crashhhhh. With this being said, that means bow hunters get first crack at deer before rifle season. The early part of season, deer are usually relaxed and often stick to their routines, allowing us as bow hunters to employ tactics that will not work at other times during the season. By now if you have done everything correctly you should have yourself your first deer. A blood trail, hoof prints and broken branches can help guide you to its location. It is best to tag and dress your deer where it lays because it is usually easier to drag out of the woods and there will be no question of when and where it was shot. I really enjoy hunting mature whitetail bucks and I do so every year. I also hunt does as well and get just as excited when a fat doe walks in as I do with a mature buck, well almost.
