“Little more than 3,000 tigers are left in the wild.” (Dybas, Last of the Forest Guardians) This is becoming a huge problem in today’s time because there should not be an issue with tigers. They lived peacefully in the wild until we come along and disrupted their homes, families, and lives. Tigers are just as important to the world as all the other animals. There have been many precautions taken in other countries to try and help the tiger survive. There are many things that contribute to the endangerment of tigers. The main two reasons tigers are having trouble surviving in the wild is because of the loss of habitat and hunters. Undoubtedly, there are other reasons why tigers are struggling today, but these two are the main causes. A majority of tigers live in their natural habitat, which is from India all the way to Southeast Asia ("Wildlife Conservation Society"), but they are losing their homes to the construction of homes for people to live in. There are people that live in the forests that contain tigers and they are constantly in competition with them over the land available. Some have even gone as far as tearing down the trees completely, which can be used as a shield for the tigers, leaving them with nowhere to roam or hide. There were 110 tigers living on the same patch of land in the Gunung Leuser National Park which is located in Indonesia. Another 100 tigers were living on unprotected lands that would soon be gone ("Sumatran Tiger"). In doing this, tigers have nowhere to live and people are also giving hunters a better chance at catching a wild tiger. This is a serious concern in the world and measures need to be taken to secure the tiger a place in the future.
As one of the most endangered species of primate in the world today the Golden Lion Tamarin exists mainly in the areas of South America, more specifically the coasts boarding the country of brazil all the to Uruguay. Originating from the luscious and seemingly never-ending rainforests of Brazil the Golden Lion Tamarins have had to relocate over the years. Due to the interruption of man through out these spacious and lush forests, many species has been left homeless and even pushed to the brink of extinction. Cultivation, deforestation, and industrialization have hacked away at this natural beauty, leaving almost nothing to those who inhabited it before man kind entered this untouched domain, including the homes of the entire population of the Golden Lion Tamarins. These magnificent primates now reside in three major national or biological reserves: Poco das Antas Biological Reserve, União Biological Reserve, and Traquara Municipal National Park. All three work towards protecting and helping rebuild the Golden Lion Tamarin species before they become extinct.
Particularly in the passage¨The Stripes Will Survive,¨ the author Jacqueline Adams presents the idea that zoos are going to protect animals that are going extinct. In the passage it says, ¨Educational programs help the local people understand the need to protect Siberian tigers.¨ This piece of evidence shows the reader that zoos are trying to protect as many animals as they can. These places are trying to make it more comfortable and inviting for the animal. Also, the passage mention that, ¨Siberian tigers in the wild has doubled.¨ This tells the reader that what the zoos are doing actually makes a difference. These tigers were about to go extinct, but with the help of zoos they are no longer endangered.
As a great deal is being done to help endangered wildlife as well as animals in general, there is still a considerable amount of improvements to make. “The exterminating of predators by governments or individuals is wrong-headed, extremely selfish, cruel and the very worst example of wildlife management. It is failed management. In today's backwards and upside-down world, our wildlife needs our protection, not extermination” (Pitt). We need to instill the good values of animals in today’s society so that we may work towards better maintenance of the future lives of these animals. Instead of mounting an animal’s head on the wall as a prize and reducing wildlife population, we should be proud of the variety of species we have on earth and leave them to live free.
Poaching threatens the dying out of endangered species. Lions have virtually disappeared in Africa causing animal activists to protest for stricter rules on hunting big game. Damian Aspinall, director of the Aspinall Foundation, said,
A social outrage has broken recently amid the scandal of Cecil the Lion’s death. Cecil was illegally hunted and killed by the American dentist Walter Palmer. Since then, it has caused the world to change their minds on the effects of trophy hunting. Succeeding the death of the renowned lion, a recent poll in America displays that on a three to one margin, the respondents said they would rather be tourists in a country that prohibits trophy hunting, instead of one that does not. The debate is ascending as more hunters proudly present their ‘trophy’ on social media. Many nature conservatives and animal protection agencies are raising awareness because of the fact that Cecil died in a meaningless and violent manner.The problem is not only in America, but around the globe. Trophy hunting should be illegal in the world because it is merely killing animals without a meaningful purpose, and it produces harmful effects to the environment.
Efforts are being taken by many organizations to save the elephants but there are a lot of factors in place and the future is looking grim for these unique mammals. With raising awareness of ivory trade especially to Chinese citizens along with some other Asian countries a decline could be in the future. The human-elephant conflict is a little harder to remedy but that doesn’t mean is impossible. Action needs to be made now though and at a fast pace otherwise we could be looking at a world twenty years down the road where elephants will only be seen in captivity.
For years tigers have been a symbol of grace, power, and majesty (“Tigers Threatened,” 2006), exhibiting mesmerizing beauty and limitless strength that has been recognized throughout the world. Because of this, tigers are highly valued, as their body parts are prized and worth an enormous fortune, consequently resulting in 3 of the 8 subspecies of tigers into extinction (“Tigers Threatened,” 2006). The remaining five tiger species went from hundreds of thousands, to only 3,000 – 5,000 combined, and one subspecies has been targeted tremendously for their prestigious status. In particular, Amur commonly referred to as the Siberian tiger, now face a great deal of danger, as poaching increases and destruction of their homes persist, leaving Amur on the brink of extinction as well. With approximately 500 left in the wild (Sartore, 2014, p. 1), the imperiled mammals status signifies severe endangerment, where recognition and assistance are in desperate need to put an end to prohibited hunting, and mindless deforestation. The following paper will incorporate aspects of both hunting and destruction of the ecosystem, as they are the two driving forces causing rapid tiger demise.
This is the first stanza of William Blake's famous poem, "The Tyger" which is also featured as the opening paragraph in "The Child by Tiger", a short story by Thomas Wolfe. In the narrative, a seemingly kind, gentle, and religious African American male named Dick Prosser goes on a vicious rampage after drinking excessively and getting in a fight with his love interest's husband (Wolfe 735). At the end of the story, a large mob made up of vengeful White people seeking justice against the "crazed Negro" tracks him down to a riverbank, where Dick awaits them with his shoes at his side and a firearm squeezed dry of ammunition (739). His stalkers gun him down, hang his lifeless body from a tree, pump him full of 300 bullets, and take his mutilated corpse back to down where he is hung in an undertaker's display window for all to see and enjoy (739). What one may not realize while begin to read this story, is that the excerpt from the Blake poem that precedes the tale actually foreshadows the theme. The tiger spoken of in the poem represents the beast that is inside all men. When provoked, a tiger can mutilate and destroy another creature, much like how Dick Prosser's character lashes out and drops bodies all over town with a repeating rifle and hundreds of rounds of bullets (735). "The Child by Tiger" serves as an example that one can only be pushed so far and be put through so much insignificant mental and physical torment before they snap and fight back against their demeaning community.

This could have not only negative effects on there predators but would eventually lead to having negative effects on species further up the food chain including the human species. Everyone’s all seen those wildlife shows on tv. The shows on National Geographic and such, showing animals in beautiful environments, everything lush and growing and nothing at all wrong that could threaten these creatures and places. But, have anyone seen the other side? The side where all these beautiful creatures and plants starve, are decimated by predators that have never been there before, and sometime even become poisoned by their very own homes and habitats? Of course no one has. That doesn’t mean that its not happening. It is happening, and its happening everywhere. And guess who is to blame? People. Society. Humans as a race pollute the environment, hunt animals simply for their parts, fish way more than humans will ever need just for the sake of money, introduce new species to new places for our own gain, and even purposefully destroy entire regions just for human expansion. And its starting to take its toll. While it is true that nature is constantly in flux and certain species come and go, humans are causing more species to disappear in the past few hundred years then nature has ever caused since the age of the dinosaurs, and therefore it is up to humans to repair the damage caused, be it cleaning the environment and habitats of these creatures, or taking more direct action to protect and preserve the species that are on the brink of extinction.
