According to the Oxford English Dictionary, human trafficking is defined as “the illegal movement of people, typically for the purpose of forced labor or commercial sexual orientation.” Between 14,500 and 17,500 people are trafficked in the U.S each year. Human trafficking is the third largest international crime industry and it reportedly generates a profit of 32 billion dollars each year (11 Facts About Human Trafficking). Human Trafficking, otherwise known as sex trafficking, is a serious human rights violation. Human Trafficking is a violation of human rights because it is a form of slavery, it is a type of sexual exploitation, and it takes away the rights of women.
What defines a slave? A slave is a person forced to work through mental and physical threats, owned by another person who has complete control over them, sold as property, and restrained from his or her freedom. While the term slavery denotes an economic system in which someone, who is known as another’s property, provides labor to another without pay, in today’s modern society, the term slavery can mean much more. The term slavery in modern times can mean forced labor, bonded force, and sexual harassment (Modern Slavery). Human trafficking is a form of slavery and a human rights violation because it takes away the rights and limits of people. According to the Polaris Project, human trafficking is a form of modern day slavery where people exploit the property of others. Human trafficking is also a human rights violation in the form of slavery because it makes people feel disconnected from the outside world. Human trafficking is increasing day by day, and many organizations, such as the Polaris Project and the UN are looking for ways to prevent human trafficking worldwide. What is a person’s life worth? What is a child’s life worth? What is a male or female’s life worth? What is a human? What is human rights? Human rights is the rights one has simply because he or she is human ( Human Rights Defined). Human trafficking goes against all human rights and is overall a human rights violation.
